As much as I prefer gas, especially for Wok cookery, since being forced to use Induction-cooking in this new apartment, I am nothing less than amazed at the speed and convenience of it! With good, well made pots and pans, the heat transference is incredible, my hand doesn't catch on fire when I have to keep stirring something as there is absolutely no heat loss around the sides of the pan, and yet the instant control of temperature is the same as it is with gas. Very different from the old electric coil stovetops. The kitchen stays so much cooler too, with no side heat escaping. This is a big consideration when you live in hot climes. When making pasta, the water comes to a hard boil in the big kettle in 1/2-2/3rds the time it took to heat it with gas. And it is so much easier to keep the cook top clean! Just a swipe with a damp rag, or sometimes a bit of soap, and it's done!

I bought three single-heating counter-top units. Most of the time we only need one, so keep the other two under the counter, freeing up more usable kitchen space. For the meals that require two or three, it's just a matter of reaching down and putting another unit beside the first.

I've done a lot of thing this morning. I got the last of the stuff I need for my vacation (except for the food), I've paid bills and I've finally stuck the collage post I had printed on a piece of foamboard and I've just glued on the eyelet thingies so I can tie on a length of fishing wire (nearly invisible) so I can hang it on a hook in the wall. Now I have to wait for the glue to dry.

With just two weeks to go until my vacation it's now time to start making lists of what to pack and what groceries we still need to buy.

Lol, I usually go on vacation at the beginning of the year and in the second half of the year. Both times 5 to 8 days. I do like to go on day trips, because I have an off-peak train subscription so I can do that relatively cheap. If I find a good offer I might take a weekend break, I'm planning a mini-cruise in May to Newcastle.

In two weeks my sister and I are going to the same holiday park we went to in November. We even managed to book the same apartment. We're planning to go to the nearby adventure center to do one of their shooting packages (riffle, long bow and clay pigeon).

I did give induction a thought, but then two words entered my head - Power Failure! We have them often enough in the winter (when my BBQ is packed away) that I just can't make myself give up on gas. Besides, I'm used to having hairless knuckles all year around- I can't just make it a summer thing!

I just discovered that Mayim Bialik, who plays Amy Farrah Fowler, Ph.D., has a Ph.D. in neuroscience. I haven't seen too many episodes of the show, but I think that's super-cool.

Woo-hoo! The minivan moved! Got it off the ice and parked it the only place available -- at the end of our dead end. Before I'm going to risk putting it back I have to shovel the last icy remains of the snow that had it walled in, and scrape up some of the ice layers that had the wheel trapped. I think I'll celebrate by going out and buying some groceries!

Only discernible damage seems to be a torn windshield wiper blade, which I need to replace before I can go anywhere because it's raining lightly right now. I have spares in the basement.

Right now, I'm taking a break with a mug of tea.

My wife couldn't understand why I left the windshield wipers standing straight up when the last snow storm started.

Cleaning up my camping equipment. I went for a walk in the jungle the other day, around a lake we'd found the week before. I was planning to spend one night, but the Gods had other plans for me. There are no paper maps of that area, so I was relying on satellite imagery to pick my route. Unfortunately, the next day after I had walked for several hours, I lost signal, and found myself on the wrong side of a mountain and no idea which direction I needed to take to get back to the road, and the sun going down. The next morning I went up the mountain, got signal again, and could figure out a good route through the jungle to get back. Not much visible terrain when there is so much jungle cover... But now the messy part... cleaning all my equipment for the next time the road gets lost!

Beautiful night here (74F). Felt the rumble from the Delta IV launch and rushed outside to watch. Clear skies, great view. It is carrying an Air Force GPS satellite. Now just sitting on the porch reading.

Sorry about everybody's winter woes. Tomorrow our woe will be strong thunderstorms, winds, and lightning.
