I used ZodWallop's name for the series; it's accurate enough that we both know what he is talking about.

I'm actually in the midst of reading it. I had read the first two sub-series before, but I'm going beyond that. I just finished the two Krondor's Sons books and am taking a pause. I'm enjoying them, but don't want to burn out on them like I had before.

Cross-post to the Children's/YA thread...

All five of the titles in Lloyd Alexander's classic series, The Chronicles of Prydain, are on sale for £0.98 each at Kindle UK, no idea why or for how long.

Apologies for repetitive post, but authors are providing free books through Smashwords for people self-isolating. I know SW isn't popular with the mods but Amazon has limited flexibility and some good authors also sell on Smashwords. Any I recommend I have read and enjoyed. I'm only posting personal recommendations made free that aren't usually.

In this category:

From Jaq D. Hawkins
The Goblin Trilogy
Epic Dark Fantasy

A companion book of short stories
https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/529338

The Wake of the Dragon
Steampunk with airship pirates
https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/158970

The entire Time Shifters series by Shanna Lauffey
https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/ShannaLauffey

Seditious Sun by Aaron Clark
Short story, apocalyptic

All 7 of Travis Bagwell's Awaken Online books are free at Amazon US right now - looks like he's starting a new series in the same world. These are LitRPG books about a sometimes-reluctant necromancer. Self-published, I've read the first two. For me, the characterization is adequate but the plot goes in some unusual directions. I think some are shorter works but several are novel-length.

Awaken Online: Catharsis
Awaken Online: Precipice
Awaken Online: Retribution
Awaken Online: Evolution
Awaken Online: Apathy
Awaken Online: Dominion
Awaken Online: Unity

Quote:
Tired of video games and books where you always hear the hero's tale? Perhaps it's time to embrace your evil side!

Jason logs into Awaken Online fed-up with reality. He's in desperate need of an escape, and this game is his ticket to finally feeling the type of power and freedom that are so sorely lacking in his real life.

Awaken Online is a brand new virtual reality game that just hit the market, promising an unprecedented level of immersion. Yet Jason quickly finds himself pushed down a path he didn't expect. In this game, he isn't the hero. There are no damsels to save. There are no bad guys to vanquish.

In fact, he might just be the villain.

The Chaos Chronicles (Books 1-3) by Jeffrey A. Carver for $3.60 at smashwords.com.

The books have previously been published by Tor Science Fiction. I read the first one after recommendations in this thread and enjoyed it.

The Color of Magic (Discworld 01) by Terry Pratchett is available for $1.99
Quote:
Terry Pratchett has invented a phantasmagorical universe in which a blissfully naive interplanetary tourist called Two-flower joins up with a drop-out wizard whose spells only seem to work half of the time.

Together they undertake a chaotic voyage through a crazy world filled with monsters and dragons, heroes and knaves. Pratchett has taken the sword and sorcery fantasy tradition and turned it in its ear to create an entertaining and bizarre spoof.

The Fifth Elephant (Discworld 24) by Terry Pratchett is £1.99.
Quote:
Well, he thought, so this is diplomacy. It's lying, only for a better class of people.

They say that diplomacy is a gentle art. That mastering it is a lifetime's work. But you do need a certain inclination in that direction. It's not something you can just pick up on the job.

A few days ago Sam Vimes was a copper – an important copper, true—chief of police – but still, at his core, a policeman. But today he is an ambassador - to the mysterious, fat-rich country of Uberwald. Today, Sam Vimes is also a man on the run.

At some point during his ambassadorship, things went very wrong. It's snowing. It's freezing. And if Vimes can't make it through the forest, with only his wits and the gloomy trousers of Uncle Vanya (don't ask), there's going to be a terrible war.

Word of caution on The Color of Magic. Check your libraries before clicking "buy now". I bought this from Amazon a few years ago on another deal and it must have been a different version since this one doesn't say I've already bought it. I can't get to the page for the version I bought at all.

I hate it when publishers do that; it happens when the publisher does a “remove and replace” rather than an “update” to get the new edition online. (Updating keeps the ASIN; replacing changes it and breaks the purchase history links.)

Open Road did that on a bunch of their titles some time ago, and some indie authors are particularly awful about it. (I just saw a freebie a couple of days ago – not from Open Road – that I’d acquired twice in the past. I avoided the threepeat and took the opportunity to not only weed out the duplicate, but clean up the survivor’s metadata.)

I agree, but there's plenty that are worse. I noticed this one seems to show sandworms lounging around on grass. Plus half the cover's taken up by the artist & title—for a one word title.

Surprisingly, it looks like that cover dates back to 1975.

I would amend that to say it this way:

Dune has had way too many BAD covers.
