We usually want to help, but...

Here is a funny recent one. My mom is 90. We started playing Scrabble. She kept asking "do I get the bonus", and I would keep repeating "if you put down the tile you get the bonus". I told her, mom remember the rule, and she said she couldn't. So I print out the rule, and when she asks, I hand her the paper. After the third time of handing her the paper, she remembered the rule.

I don't think it was the fact that I printed it out, it was that it was more effort to read the rule then to remember the rule.

90 is a whole other kettle of fish, although amazingly, I have a number of nonagenarians as customers and they do shockingly well. Truly!

I THINK (and could easily be wrong) that Rumple's folks are my age. Before I stick my foot in it any further, I'll wait to be sure!

Your mum, if memory serves, is my age. Late 60's right? Or am I mis-remembering? Are your folks older than I am? I don't believe so. And I'm damn sure old enough to live with the consequences of my own damn mistakes and stupidity.(If they are a LOT older...that's a different convo.)

If it was just any grocery order it wouldn't be my problem, but this is for Christmas dinner and it would be a shame if we end up with only half a Christmas dinner.

And why didn't my father go to the supermarket. Well, because he would come back with the wrong things. And yes, a big part of that is weaponized incompetence. Again, if it was their regular groceries it wouldn't be my problem, but with Christmas I'd rather not have the cheapest off brand ice tea or satay sauce (been there, done that).

My parents are in their early 70s.

But the grocery shopping is done, the last errands have been done, I've wrapped presents and cleaned the apartment. Tonight I'm on my own since my sister just left for the Christmas party organized by her work. So I'm about to order dinner (Mexican) and find a couple of movies to watch my sister isn't interested in.

Yes, I agree. Taht's roughly my age, by 3-5 years and by god, we're not decrepit and we can manage quite nicely. That BS weaponized incompetence...hell, I'd have let him live with the results. Man, that stuff really chaps my ass.

(I was an unhappy camper when I recorded--I'd thought!!!--Die Hard, on Paramount. Alas, those w*nkers, ti was the Airplane Version! COMMERCIALS and blurred stuff and cut-out dialogue--you all know whereof I speak!) It put off my Xmas morning official Die Hard start, which I play at midnight, Christmas Eve, each year. For me, it's just not Xmas unless I see the Burl Ives Rudolph, complete with dentist elves and Abominables, the Thin Man (all six!) and Die Hard. Them's the Hitch Xmas Rules. (Somehow, somewhere, I'd managed to lose my Die Hard!)

So, the hell with it. I coughed up $9.99 to DirecTV to buy it. At least the "boughten" version is in LBX--instead of a corrupted pillarbox (blergh)--and there are no commercials and no edited stuff.

Yipee-yi-yo-ki-yay...

Well. You all know the rest!

I still do all my food shopping in person at the store. There is a limit to what I can carry, but I'm doing better since I started using a rolling bag (a cart is unwieldy for me, but I use one to drop off laundry). I drag the bag up 4 flights. I'm 72 and have bad knees, but I try to stay active.

I had a Whole Foods delivery ONCE over a year ago and gave instructions for them to bring it up to my apartment, but they didn't. Had to go down and get it. What a fail. Might as well shop in the store if they don't bring it up to my floor.

Happy holidays folks! My family, too, has been sick in bed most of this past week, but fortunately, we were all healthy enough on Saturday to go see the Broadway show that was the long-planned family holiday gift this year.

After New Years, I need to start worrying about finding a new job
...I got job-eliminiated....but I'm not worrying til then, and I've been treating November and December as a nice long paid vacation. So...yay!

Five weeks for me, though at this point it's mostly just an annoyance. It also spread into my ear and I'll finally get to see a doctor about it this week.
