I don't usually read on my iPhone, but occasionally I'll use it for the Kindle freebies that I can't get on Sony that I'm interested in.

Perhaps I have an odd schedule for reading my Ebooks, but I read them ONLY at bedtime. Each day I read one chapter of each of several books - with the Ereader, I no longer have a great stack of books beside the bed!!
Right now I'm reading the following: -The Zeppelin's Passenger, by E.Phillips Oppenheim (a great W.W.I story set in England), -Ticket No."9672" by Jules Verne (somewhat tedious, but a good story nonetheless; set in Norway long ago) -Star Nation Evolution by Richard J. Boylan (sort of an E.T. conspiracy-theory book; interesting if you're into that sort of thing) -The Plant Hunters by Mayne Reid (a true story, I think, about a young plant hunter and his experiences searching for new varieties in the Indian Himalayas in the 1800s) -The Planter of Malata by Joseph Conrad (about a planter in the 1800s in the South Pacific) -On Secret Patrol in High Asia by L.V. S. Blacker ( about the British Corps of Guides who secretly patrolled the border regions between China and India in the 1800s) -Over Prairie Trails by Frederick Philip Grove (autobiographical story of a teacher in the prairies of Canada in the early 1900s - a bit tedious, but a very good description of the area before the advent of modern roads, etc.) -[It's Up to You, Now!by Neil Haddon (sort of a self-help/conspiracy theory book but a really good book, with lots of up-to-date info. on brain research, etc.) This, along with most of the others, is a free download. -Japanese Poetry & Prints (Unfortunately, my Sony 600 doesn't show the wonderful colours in this one.) I converted this from a website owned by Visipex.com and I assume from what I read that it was all right to do so. I have it as an Epub on my reader. -The Golden Scorpion by Sax Rohmer ( an excellent Fu Man Chu - style thriller from the twenties! I'd highly recommend it! -The Cariboo Trail - A Chronicle of the Gold Fields of British Columbia by Agnes C. Laut (got this one from the Gutenburg Project and reformatted it as an Epub book, which reads much more easily. The title says it all. A really good read, if this subject interests you. -Ayesha of Constantinople by Sherwood Cobb (a love story set in Constantinople in the 1800s, I think, which deals with the cultural differences between western and Muslim societies at that time. -The Bat by Mary Roberts Rinehart & Roery Hopwood ( another detective story set back in the '20s - really good!) -Arctic Drift by Clive Cussler ( I bought this one and it's well worth the price! It's about politics, environmentalism, etc., with a really good villain!) No wonder I have to sleep in late each morning, eh? Last edited by Fringecup; 01-29-2010 at 12:53 AM. Would like to read *Dark Mysteries of the Vatican*. Free from Amazon (if you have a Kindle), free from Sony (if you live in the USA). I'm a Kindleless foreigner. Maybe I'll write *Dark Mysteries of the Ebook*.

Finished The Marble Orchard by William F Nolan, which I picked up after Moejoe's recommendation. It was a clever blend of fiction and non-fiction: Raymond Chandler is the narrator and the hero of the book himself, and along with his pals Dashiell Hammett and Erle Stanley Gardner, becomes an amateur detective himself for a while. It's not like reading a Marlowe book and was not intended to be, but it does have the atmosphere of the era and is a very enjoyable noir read. At the same time, most biographical information and descriptions about existing persons, places and events are accurate. This had the effect of putting me in non-fiction mode in the beginning of the book, but then I stopped trying to tell the real from the fictional and just enjoyed the book. I'd love to read the other two of the series if I ever find them.
I'm now reading Christopher Brookmyre's Pandaemonium (brilliant as ever), and listening to Kathryn Stockett's The Help while I work. I said before that I'm not a big fan of audiobooks but they get me through boring bits of work, so sometimes I do choose to listen instead of read. This particular audiobook is beautifully performed, and I think it adds considerably to the book. |

I'm about halfway through "Fireflies in December" by Jennifer Erin Valent and loving it. It's a simple straight-forward novel of a girl's coming of age and perhaps the coming of age of a country as well. Set in the 1930's and focused on the "race issue"

I like having my Sony books also on my iPhone since I always have my iPhone on me. For example, my wife and I were in Buenos Aires in late December and, one day, we took the ferry over to Uruguay. Since I thought it would be a quick trip, I didn't bring my Sony with me. But it was over an hour from one country to the other and, fortunately, I had the book on my iPhone and cheerfully read away during the voyage (over and back).

Uruguay was very pleasant. We only spent the day there, wandering around Colonia, but found the people very friendly and the beer quite drinkable. We're considering a separate vacation there in future
