The original 14 books were chronologically and by publication date the same. After the Waterloo book he went back and wrote others that started earlier and later in the time line. I feel because the later published books fit all along the timeline it is better to read them chronologically.

I would read them in chronological order. I normally prefer published order, as you know, but this is a case where I think that doesn't make sense.

Oh, and the Audible versions are superb. I believe three of them are done by David Case, but that isn't a problem at all.

Thank you both for the input; chronological it is. I'm ordinarily a strict publication date reader, but I was willing to entertain an exception in this case, given the historical backdrop.

I might have been tempted by Whispersync pricing in conjunction with a library loan, but it's not offered on the first book and it's $9.99 on the second, still too rich for my blood, so OverDrive it'll be.

I'm also reading them by internal chronology. It seems to make more sense to do it that way.

I read them mostly in chronological order. The three India prequels are actually done well enough that you don't realise they are backfill, in my opinion. A few of the other later additions are more obviously self-contained and inconsequential, but it doesn't do any harm to read them in internal order.

Thanks. No nay votes, so I shall fight my natural inclination even if it feels a bit like reading The Magician's Nephew before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which would be a crime against humanity.

Absolutely. No-one should be so foolish or unfortunate as to do that.

Personally, I could have passed on the India ones entirely, but on reflection, I'm still glad I read them. Fortunately, my library has almost all of these available in either MP3 or ePub versions. And for the rest, I'll do Audible versions. Though right now I have way too many Audible books in my TBR.

Funny you should say this. Because when I thought about it some more, I decided that since I'm most interested in the Napoleonic Wars, I'd skip the first three and start with Sharpe's Trafalgar. It would be different if Cornwell had written them chronologically as I wouldn't want to miss the backstory, but I feel as if I've got a little latitude here. Thanks for the validation. (I figure I can always go back to the Indian books at some point.)

And, of course, Sharpe's Trafalgar is the first of those read by Patrick Tull. (my mis-type in my earlier comment, should have been Patrick Tull, not David Case who is really the same as Frederick Davidson.) I can highly recommend the Audible version, if you have a credit available...

Even better, I borrowed the Kindle book from OverDrive when I saw the Whispersync price is only $3.99! Now I'm just waiting for Audible to start the November promotion so it'll count as one of my four books and am listening to a short book in the meantime.

I need to plan out my November purchases. I only have a pair of credits, so I'll need to find some whispersync books to get my 4 books.

The combination of Kobo's £0.99 SF/Fantasy sale and their 50% off sale got me. I got three more Jack Campbell books for £0.49 each!

You can't not, at that price, if it's something you wanted. And the coupon's done, so you got in under the wire.

But oh, the TBR!

(And my apologies for the lengthy hijack. The input helped me a lot. Bringing it around to topic, I plan to keep Sharpe to OverDrive plus the odd Whispersync deal to fill in.)
