Shel - I just finished "How to Wash a Cat" and I'm not sure if I'd recommend it. The ending was really convuluted and I'm still scratching my head. On the flip side though, it's finally getting me off my butt to read "A Crack in the Edge of the World" by Simon Winchester. "How to Wash a Cat" was based in San Francisco and talked a lot about the Gold Rush and the earthquake/fire of 1906. I got Winchester's book years ago when I worked at Waldenbooks as an Advance Readers copy and have never read it. Of course, a few months ago when I watched a program on it, I couldn't find the darn book. But now I have it, and that's what I'm reading next!

I read the first Terri Thayer Stamping Sisters mystery last night. I think I would have liked it better if I hadn't been trying to keep an eye on the show Chris was watching at the same time! I think I'm about to start Karen E. Olson's Missing Ink later today, after schoolwork is done for the week. |

I've finished The Judas Goat by Robert B. Parker. While it was good, it was fairly light reading overall. I've got the next one in the Spencer series ready to go at some point.
Anyway, I've started Star Trek: Titan: Synthesis. So far so good. But I have read mixed reviews about it on the TrekBBS forum. |

Just finished "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo". Reall enjoyed the book. As mentioned previously it was the first book in some time that actually grapped me and made me want to keep reading reading reading. I did pace myself though as I didn't want to run out too early.
Love the querky characters in the book - they all have issues and are slightly disturbed. It took a while to get the characters together in the storyline. I am still not sure, how they main characters figured out who the villain was, but I am sure a re-read will solve that (I am a somewhat fast and sloppy reader). Some people might not like the characters (there are more on the odd than on the normal side) but for me, they made the book as it made it harder to predict their next actions. I am now looking forward to the next one but will have a break and read something else (hmmmm - not decided what yet) so I don't tire of his writing. |

Have you read Homer and Langley by E.L. Doctorow? Are they they type of "odd" or like John Irving's odd characters? |

Weirdly enough, the way the characters are described, the behaviours are so very swedish / scandinavian. Not wanting to discriminate, but I just can't see that story being set anywhere else. Larsson has managed to bring misfits of society seemlessly in contact with very rich people as well as waving a flag for the freedom of the press. They all have relationship issues but all seem to get along. And it doesn't even read as odd when Larsson brings the characters together. I'm trying real hard to be a bit obscure as I don't want to give anything away. Would be a shame if anything I write would spoil the enjoyment for someone else. What the hell, I'm gonna read the next book right now. I can always read them again ![]() |

I'm about 1/4 into it and can highly recommend it, especially if one enjoys convoluted and highly developed characters. Thanks for mentioning this. I was going to wait until I finished, but I'm glad you mentioned it first! ![]() Don |

Put Sometimes a Great Notion aside since it wasn't grabbing me and picked up the Spellman series which seems to suit my mood at the moment because I am quite enjoying them in all their silliness. Reminds me of the Janet Evanovich Plum series.
