No Big Sleep, but I haven't looked elsewhere for a cheap/free Canadian edition.

^ If one wants cheap, the suggestion above is certainly the way to go. I would highly recommend that if one lives in Canada.

For those interested in the contents of the PRICED, CANADIAN, COPYRIGHTED EDITION that I mentioned, here's a complete listing:
  1. The Big Sleep
  2. Farewell, My Lovely
  3. The High Window
  4. The Lady in the Lake
  5. The Little Sister
  6. The Long Goodbye
  7. Playback
  8. Blackmailers Don't Shoot
  9. Smart-Aleck Kill
  10. Finger Man
  11. Killer in the Rain
  12. Nevada Gas
  13. Spanish Blood
  14. Guns at Cyrano's
  15. The Man Who Liked Dogs
  16. Pickup on Noon Street
  17. Goldfish
  18. The Curtain
  19. Try the Girl
  20. Mandarin's Jade
  21. Red Wind
  22. The King in Yellow
  23. Bay City Blues
  24. The Lady in the Lake (Short Story)
  25. Pearls Are a Nuisance
  26. Trouble is My Business
  27. I'll Be Watching
  28. The Bronze Door
  29. No Crime in the Mountains
  30. Professor Bingo's Snuff
  31. The Pencil
  32. English Summer

I've read about 2/3 of all of this over the years, and have a number of these in hardback. Almost all of these have chapter titles, so many here are of novella length. Too, some of these (I would guess) were serialized and then later expanded into novel length. The short story of 'The Lady in the Lake' (for example) has 8 chapters.

I'd go with the Amazon U.S.A. edition.
Yeah, there's lots of suspect Chandler editions available in the Amazon US store as well. I only share the editions put out by Vintage/Black Lizard. The rest look like bootlegs to me.

Outside of the US, I'd say the ones to get are the big Penguin collections, though they are missing the short stories.

Looking at the Faded Page, those editions are the bootlegs for sale in the Amazon US store.

I do love the vintage covers on Farewell My Lovely, The High Window, The Lady in the Lake and Trouble Is My Business.

The Dawn Patrol by Don Winslow is $1.99 at Amazon US.

I thought I'd picked up The Power of the Dog by Winslow previously, but Amazon says no. Anyway, I've not read him but have been interested in trying his work.

Quote:
From the bestselling author of Savages (now an Oliver Stone film).

As cool as its California surfer heroes, Don Winslow delivers a high velocity, darkly comic, and totally righteous crime novel.

Every morning Boone Daniels catches waves with the other members of The Dawn Patrol: four men and one woman as single-minded about surfing as he is. Or nearly. They have "real j-o-b-s"; Boone, however, works as a PI just enough to keep himself afloat. But Boone's most recent gig-investigating an insurance scam—has unexpectedly led him to a ghost from his past. And while he may have to miss the biggest swell of his surfing career, this job is about to give him a wilder ride than anything he's ever encountered. Filled with killer waves and a coast line to break your heart, The Dawn Patrol will leave you gasping for air.

Thank you so much!

I saw this in the BookBub email but ignored it, not knowing what it was. I clicked on your link because I know like me you have a soft spot for early 20th century mystery/crime stories.

Jonathan Latimer is new to me, but he has another very promising book called Sinners and Shrouds.

I've never read any books by Terri Blackstock, because they have always seemed as if they are more thriller-ish than mystery-ish, and (with a few exceptions) I'm pretty much a mystery-ish person. However two omnibuses of two of her series (complete runs) are on sale today at $1.99 each as part of the US Kindle Daily Deal, matched at Kobo US. So if you love this author and want to replace DTB, or want to try the author knowing you have the whole series if you like it, or just because 40 or 50 cents per book is pretty darn good, here you go...

The Newpointe 911 Collection: Private Justice, Shadow of Doubt, Word of Honor, Trial by Fire, Line of Duty
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Newpointe-911...dp/B00LKWQ4KM/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...911-collection

The Cape Refuge Collection: Cape Refuge, Southern Storm, River's Edge, Breaker's Reef
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Cape-Refuge-C...dp/B00L0S6IAC/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...uge-collection

$4.99 isn't a great sale price, but I really like this author/series, and this is the most recent in series (2019), and the author's books rarely go on sale in the US, and it has been $13.99 until a day or two ago, so WTH, I'm posting it...

A Knife to the Heart, 21st in the Çetin Ikmen series by Barbara Nadel
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DTBC9TP
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-k...n-mystery-21-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
The twenty-first chilling Istanbul crime thriller starring Çetin Ikmen, 'the Morse of Istanbul' (Daily Telegraph), from Silver Dagger Award-winning author Barbara Nadel. Not to be missed by fans of Donna Leon.

A derelict villa near Istanbul holds dark spirits, secrets and murder...

Retired inspector Çetin Ikmen must confront his demons to reveal the shocking truth behind a young girl's death...

When historian Suzan Tan is asked to examine the contents of a derelict villa on the Bosphorus, she is intrigued to discover a Ouija board among the artefacts. Forty years ago, a young girl was found with a knife in her heart in this villa. It is said that before her death this very Ouija board spelled out her name. The verdict was suicide - but what if it was a brutal act of murder and her killer was still walking free?

Suzan asks Ikmen to solve the case, and despite his reluctance to get involved, he soon finds himself drawn into the mystery. With the help of his friend Inspector Süleyman, Ikmen delves into Istanbul's dark underbelly to uncover a terrifying tale of secrets, lies and murder.

Two titles in the Jake Samson/Rosie Vicente series by Shelley Singer are free right now at Kindle US and UK. One of them is the first one, which is nice if you like to read in order.

Samson's Deal, #1
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DDU756Q/
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DDU756Q/

Suicide King, #5
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KKRHPJ2
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00KKRHPJ2/

None of the titles in this six-book series are very expensive, and they go on Countdown from time to time too, so if you're in luck if you decide you like these two. Also, there was an omnibus of all six that was briefly free a while back, so check carefully before you actually buy any...
