Yes, it's their website, it's driving me crazy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The amount of hoops to jump through to get their site to work is crazy.

I'd end up having to switch back and forth, which is both a PITA and tends to get the store software excited. The _primary_ reason I have a Kobo account at all is to have a purely Canadian account, since my Kindle is on a US account. And some things Canadian just don't make it to the US Kindle store. So I keep the Kobo account for buying Canadian-only content. But they still aren't allowing promo codes on the Agency publishers, so I went ahead and created a US Kobo account that runs on one of my virtual machines. (Because of the Adobe Digital Editions tie-in, I need to keep it on a separate machine.)

Once I've bought the book, I strip the DRM, convert to AZW3 and put it on my Kindle.

There's no need to use a separate Adobe Digital Editions account. The Kobo account has no tie in to the ADE account. It's just like having multiple library accounts with the same copy of ADE or accounts at Diesel, Kobo, etc.

Well, actually, there is. ADE uses your email address to register and activate, and Kobo requires a unique email address for each account. Now if I used an unregistered ADE, it would probably work, but then I'd run the risk of problems if I changed machines.

When you buy a book (DRMed), an acsm file is sent to your machine so that ADE can deal with the downloaded book. What that means is, ADE doesn't care where that books comes from (nothing to do with email accounts), it converts the book to something readable to your ADE registered machines.

AFAIK, that's how it goes. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

My experience says you are correct. I buy books using three email accounts, and always put them through ADE, haven't had a problem yet.

Exactly. ADE has to be registered with an email address, but that email address only has to match other machines/devices in order to open the DRM'd file. The library/vendor sends you an ACSM file which tells ADE how to download the file, and the terms of the license. ADE then authorizes the license with a content server (which encrypts the file using the key registered to the authorized email) and downloads the encrypted file. The whole process is agnostic of the vendor you purchased/checked out the content from and any email addresses they may have on file. Actually Overdrive doesn't even store your email address other than if you place a book on hold (which is strictly used to notify you).

Well, I avoid ADE altogether by using Sony Reader for PC as my pre Calibre repository of all Epubs - DRM + DRM free. And library ebooks)

I don't ever touch my ADE account because of heaps of hassles some time ago.

Yep - one can successfully avoid ADE irrespective that it's an Adobe ACSM file because Sony Reader for PC accepts them without question.

And one doesn't need to have a Sony ereader in order to have Reader for PC.

Actually you're not avoiding ADE, as such... Reader for PC has ADE embedded in it. I do have a Sony Reader and also use the Reader for PC as my ADE client for 99% of my purchases/library checkouts. It's also slightly more Alf-friendly as ADE at one point was attempting to obscure the keys needed by Alf...
Reader for PC doesn't handle the browser plugin needed by a few sites that don't provide a direct ACSM download (just a button to launch ADE), but I'm seeing fewer of those lately. I also discovered that Reader for PC doesn't work with OpenLibrary... It will open the ACSM file, but refuse to download the content. Fortunately, you can load Reader for PC and ADE side by side and they share the same key... ADE 2.0 works fine with OpenLibrary.

Yikes hw, I seem to have been lucky with downloading straight into my Sony Reader for PC cos I've never had a drop of trouble .....

Oh yep, I know that Sony has ADE embedded, but I don't actually have to deal with the ADE for PC app, or any other ADE app. Phew .... ... that's why I like it and do it the way I do.

Maybe I haven't had any download glitches because of the sites I buy from ....
