Welcome to MobileRead, reachingdeep and I am so sorry for your health difficulties. I'm with you on wi-fi. I could care less about having it on my reader. I have it on my laptops and cell phone when I need it but am happy to plug my reader into my computer to download books when I want them. Honestly, my house isn't that big that I can't take a few steps to my studio and get hooked up.

I'm sure it won't be hard to find someone who has been eyeballing any reader but can't afford a new one. I'd put it on ebay and get more people using ebooks. It'll benefit us all.

So I got tired of wating for you guys to tell me how it is

and I have decided to go out and ask my friendly neighbouhood SonyStyle sales associate about this issue.

I asked a guy to tell me "friggin' NOW" whats is going on... He was cool and he did not send me far and wide, he said they have heard about the upcoming release, he showed me internal email that was mentioning the fact that service manuals were "discovered" online and he did and did not confirm the price of USD 199 and USD 299 per unit, what he did not know is the date of the release and the date of shipment. But they are aware of the fact it is coming sometimes soon.

I also mentioned that no Sony release is made right now, to which he replied in fashion that made me, almost, think that there will not be official prerelease campaing for those. He kind of shrugged off this press release nonsense.

PS How did people do this before when they needed to find stuff out??? Did they really have to go out and get news themselves, (I cannot imagine my life without google and wiki), actually???

PSI and where is the spell checker???

Hmm... this got me thinking that it seems like it's been awhile since I've read any of those annoying 'not available in Quebec' notices on sites such as SonyStyle.ca or Dell.ca, so I decided to call Sony and ask them about it. I spoke with a sales rep who said they ship the readers to Quebec no problem. She also mentioned that the 700 was discontinued, the 505 was not, and that new models are expected in the coming months.

She said it is unlikely that we would find any Readers on SonyStyle store shelves in Quebec, but she seemed to remember hearing about a store in maybe Montreal or Brossard that kept some in the back that they took out if anyone asked about them.

I then called the SonyStyle store in Brossard, and he said they don't currently have any in stock, but when the new models come out they will have them in all stores.

I'm taking their comments with a grain of salt, as sales reps say the darndest things sometimes. But it would appear, at least, that we can now get our hands on the Sony Readers in Quebec through SonyStyle.ca.

Sign me up for a PRS 600!

If true, she probably said something that she shouldn't have... But I'm hoping that this is actually the case. That we'll have the 300, 500, and 600 series. I think that the general consensus is the 700, while a good attempt, failed on screen quality issues - even if some people don't have a problem with it, or if the benefits outweigh this issue for them, I think that the general popular view was negative. (Sony seems to have made a decision to drop the built-in light as a way of improving that.) Maybe they'll then add a fourth 800 or 900 (as has been speculated) that will be for a larger-screen model.

I think she just meant that they still had some 505's in stock, but no 700's.

"Discontinued" is a pretty significant industry term - as opposed to just "out of stock" or "unavailable". I somehow doubt that she confused things in that sense. (Unless she had meant discontinued online rather than in store.)

It is rather surprising that the 505 would be discontinued. The general impression I get is that people are quite happy with that model.

I know, but it's not entirely surprising that Sony would want to consolidate models. I'd expect the 600 to have some of the same features of the 505 that we love. Plus a new release gets the marketplace jazzed.

we should know within a few weeks I think. If the screen on the 600 is as good as the 505, I'll buy one.

Hopefully, though, even if they do discontinue the models they would still provide firmware updates (assuming that something important comes out)? I know of other vendors who do that - you can no longer buy the device but you can still update it...

The PRS-300 and PRS-505 are so similar that I'm sure Sony is discontinuing the PRS-505. There is no point in having three models between $200 and $300.

I agree with igorsk that any 3rd Sony Reader will be a "900". I guess (hope) that this is just like the 600 but with a 9.7" screen. This is the large-screen device that Amazon should have produced, except that they are clueless about PDFs. So far as I know there is no hard evidence that a PRS-900 is even on the drawing board, but it would make sense for Sony to compete for the large screen market.
