FWIW, I added a couple buttons for OTA blocking/unblocking to the Helper extension, following @sumpin's feedback

BUT, it may be a good idea anyway, what with the chance of increasing resistance from Amazon to owners having control of their device. There are a couple more that I have been testing on a couple of machines, but do not intend to post anything until we see how things develop. |

I'm on production fw5.10.1.2 and SKIP_UPDATE_CHECK made a huge difference in my PW4's battery life when wifi is on. At one point, battery was draining at 1-2% per hour on standby if I forget to turn off wifi (need it while reading for KOReader progress sync). Looks like 5.10.x has gotten quite aggressive when it comes to phoning home... |

This is the only forum that I follow.
And I am struggling to follow this one. BUT ... I have noticed the problem over a year ago on "Kindle Basic" models. At least I kept notes on what I had done to each of the examples, so I still think there are alternatives that we can use. I just don't want to get Lab126 working on fixing the other things now. Better we let them fix one problem at a time. ![]() |

So to get the updated version id just download the new version and overwrite the existing files using a file browser when plugged in to a computer via USB ? And when you say 'helper extension' what exactly are you referring to and where do I get it ? I've also noticed battery life dropping quickly when wifi is on. Maybe this would mitigate it. @arooni:
Literally, "Helper", in the KUAL Extensions listing of the Snapshots ![]() And yeah, as usual for a KUAL extension, update == install. |

I created these manually before the snapshots were updated and the SKIP_UPDATE_CHECK specifically has greatly helped improve standby battery when I leave wifi on. Last edited by ilovejedd; 02-02-2019 at 03:43 PM. |

Dumb question; but if I spend most of my time in koreader (which I'm finding more and more indispensable), is there *any* reason to *ever* update the kindle firmware?
I know KOReader already supports OTA updates for its own app. |

I actually keep almost all my PW3s on 5.8.x (Kindlet support). Only PW3 I have on higher are those that were shipped with 5.9.x and even then, I keep them on fw5.9.6.1 (last jailbreakable by software). |

Kernel or low-level system upgrades, which may include significant features, performance, or bug fixes
![]() (It's rare, but it has happened, IIRC, 5.5/5.6 (significant epdc update), 5.8 (java update), 5.9 (epdc again) and 5.10 (epdc again) were all such milestones, to some extent). |

Users might not like feature this or that and Amazon Lab126 might want to change things for reasons unknown ... But firmware that just fails or locks up the device has been rare since the introduction of full image updates. So go with the above answer: "Personal preference". |

seems like the only way to potentially brick the device is to allow the battery to be completely exhausted. there were some threads that were talking about boot loops happening in that case. i'll try to avoid it

Eh, all my Kindles spend most of their time in a pile on my shelf, and I've yet to encounter any issue reviving them from their "oh noes, battery is empty" shutdown
![]() (f.g., earlier this afternoon, I booted a Kindle Touch that I last touched in May). You just have to remember to unplug/replug them once they've rebooted, as some of them stay in trickle charge otherwise. (... and also not to leave those with RP+CRP installed in diags too long, as, again, weird charge behavior there). |
