A number of those SYNC 2017 books sound good (rare, for me). I'm counting on you to remind us when each debuts! Thanks.

When each weekly offer goes live, I'll post it along with details of the two free books. On the last day of each offer, I'll post a reminder that it's about to expire.

The key thing to remember with these offers is that they're only free for 7 days. If you miss the deadline, there's no way to legally get them for free.

Here are some new free shorts on Audible. They are previews / intros for the respective series.
  • Rocky River Bridge: A District 89 Prequel by D. J. Molles (23 minutes)

    Quote:
Two young boys set off for the Rocky River Bridge through their war-torn North Carolina hometown, both with something to prove - an adventure that will quickly teach them the realities of the raging world around them, in this prequel to DJ Molles' newest novel: The Purge of District 89.
  • Tea at the Midland by David Constantine (14 minutes)

    Quote:
Winner of the BBC National Short Story Award 2010.

'To the woman watching they looked like grace itself, the heart and soul of which is freedom. It pleased her particularly that they were attached by invisible strings to colourful curves of rapidly moving air. How clean and clever that was! You throw up something like a handkerchief, you tether it and by its headlong wish to fly away, you are towed along....'

Like the kite surfers in this opening scene, the characters in David Constantine's fourth collection are often delicately caught in moments of defiance. Disregarding their age, their family, or the prevailing political winds, they show us a way of marking out a space for resistance and taking an honest delight in it.
  • The World of Shadow by Kate Hamer (29 minutes)

    Quote:
'The World of Shadow' introduces The Doll Funeral and delves further into one of the characters in the book - Shadow. Shadow flits through The Doll Funeral; he has a close but often tempestuous relationship with the hero, Ruby.

In the short story, we rewind back and see a snapshot of his life, find out more about his connection with Ruby and experience the life, pain and love of this boy who has such a profound influence on the course of the book.
Enjoy!

$0.99 -- Wild Child -- TC Boyle/ TC Boyle --> 2.4 hrs --> psychological

Quote:
This is the title story from the collection Wild Child and was originally published in McSweeney’s.

It is at the end of the eighteenth century, in the new French Republic, when the savage is first seen outside the village of Lacaune. The boy quickly becomes a legend among the townsfolk. Is he truly a human child or a wild beast?

“Wild Child” is based on the story of Victor of Aveyron, the feral child brought from the French wilderness to Paris in an attempt to civilize him. It is the story of a boy who, at the tender age of five, had his throat slit in the forest and was left for dead. It follows him from his capture by the villagers of Lacaune to his lessons with Jean-Marc Gaspard Itard, a doctor specializing in teaching the deaf and mute.

$4.95 -- The Plot Against America -- Philip Roth/ Ron Silver --> 13.4 hrs --> alt history

Quote:
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history.

In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial “understanding” with Adolf Hitler, while the new government embarks on a program of folksy antisemitism.

For one boy growing up in Newark, Lindbergh’s election is the first in a series of ruptures that threaten to destroy his small, safe corner of America—and with it, his mother, his father, and his older brother.

$6.48 WS Deal on Very Highly Rated Ebook on the Soviet Submarine Kursk Catastrophe.

There are three or four good Whispersync deals that I could have posted. This one gets the nod because of a combination of outstanding ratings and the price of the Whispersync deal in relation to the price of the audio alone at Audible.

Title: A Time to Die: The Untold Story of the Kursk Tragedy.
Genre: Non-Fiction (History/Soviet Union/Military).
Author(s): Robert Moore.
Price: $6.48 ($1.99 ebook (marked down) + $4.49 Whispersync audio).
Regular Price of Audio, by Itself, at Audible: $29.95 (1 credit).
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews: 4.4 stars/41 reviews (Amazon); even better (relatively speaking) at GoodReads, where it has an average 4.11 rating, from 248 ratings.
Audio Rating/Number of Ratings: 4.80/16 ratings.
Pages/Audio Length: 290/10 hours and 3 minutes.
Narrator(s): Pete Cross.
Audible URL: https://www.audible.com/pd/History/A...ook/B01IAH98HU.
Amazon URL (you can get the whole Whispersync deal here): https://www.amazon.com/Time-Die-Unto.../dp/B000XUBE34.
Comments: It's the #1 seller in two Kindle store categories, and in one regular Amazon book category.
Book Description (Amazon):
A riveting, brilliantly researched account of the deadliest submarine disaster in history and its devastating human cost.

On a quiet Saturday morning in August 2000, two explosions--one so massive it was detected by seismologists around the world--shot through the shallow Arctic waters of the Barents Sea. Russia’s prized submarine, the Kursk, began her fatal plunge to the ocean floor.

Award-winning journalist Robert Moore presents a riveting, brilliantly researched account of the deadliest submarine disaster in history. Journey down into the heart of the Kursk to witness the last hours of the twenty-three young men who survived the initial blasts. Visit the highly restricted Arctic submarine base to which Moore obtained secret admission, where the families of the crew clamored for news of their loved ones.

Drawing on exclusive access to top Russian military figures and the Kursk's highly restricted Arctic submarine base, Moore tells the inside story of the Kursk disaster with factual depth and the compelling moment-by-moment tension of a thriller.

Get a free episode of Dark Shadows: The Missing Reel, courtesy of the Big Finish website. Big Finish may be best known as selling (and maybe giving away) Dr. Who episodes.

This is not my thang. It is so much not my thang that I posted it on the Media Deals thread, thinking that it must be a video of some kind. Thanks to library addict for informing me that it probably was not a video, but an audiobook of some kind.

Here's how to get the free episode. Navigate to this webpage. Scroll down a little over halfway. The box with the info about the freebie says, "You can download DARK SHADOWS: The Missing Reel for FREE using the code: LA1958 at the link below!" A plain white button saying "DOWNLOAD" is, or contains the link. I haven't tried the link myself, to see what happens, because, like I said, this is not my thang.

I wouldn't call it a recommendation. I haven't read the book or heard the audiobook, but I vetted both (especially the ebook) very carefully.

I was somewhat familiar with the Kursk accident, however. It seems like there was another, similar, Soviet submarine tragedy during the Cold War days, but I've forgotten the details. I don't think that all lives were lost in that accident, though. In fact, I've forgotten the details about the Kursk accident. I'll probably Wikipedia both of them.

Of course, the U.S. wasn't immune to submarine accidents, either, in which sailors lost their lives. But I don't think that we have ever lost a nuclear submarine, (like the Soviets did with the Kursk). In part, this was due to the U.S.'s much more rigorous standards for construction, maintenance, repair, etc. of submarines in our nuclear fleet, I think.

Thanks for your comment.

Some of you may be interested in this fact that I got from Wikipedia also. I don't remember it being mentioned in the book description, but sometimes I don't read much of them.

Under "In popular culture":
Kursk, an upcoming film directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Colin Firth and Matthias Schoenaerts, based on Robert Moore's book A Time to Die, screenplay by Robert Rodat.

The USS Thresher out of Portsmouth, NH, was the first nuclear submarine to be lost at sea, with more fatalities than the Kursk - the most fatalities of any submarine disaster ever.
