The newest free download from Classical-music.com is Verstummt, Verstummt, ihr holden Saiten "from Bach's Trauerode Cantata 'Laß, Fürstin, laß noch einen Strahl'. It is performed by Joanne Lunn and the Bach Collegium Japan, conducted by Masaaki Suzuki.
This recording boasts 'lithe choral singing, balletic rhythms, and a detailed yet transparent recorded sound' writes Kate Bolton-Porciatti in the March issue of BBC Music Magazine." http://www.classical-music.com/free-...-holden-saiten. I haven't had an opportunity to listen to this one, yet. I hope that it is complete and of good quality. UPDATE: Without listening to both of them, I have to believe that this is the same track that I posted on 4-11-16 (post #335). The information given about the track that I posted above was slightly different (including the name of the performer!), so I thought that it was a different track from the same album. But the names of the piece are identical. And after downloading the one that I posted above, I found that the name of the file was the same as the one that I posted on 4-11-16. Also, the file size was identical. The upshot is, please disregard the post. My apologies for any inconvenience. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-14-2016 at 12:14 AM. |

I've been trying to post each new free song that eMusic.com offers as soon as reasonably possible after they post it, since each freebie lasts for just one day. I just wanted to let you guys know that a new song has been posted for today, but it appears to have the same issue as yesterday's did, before yesterday's got corrected!
If and when eMusic straightens this one out, here's what you will be able to download for free: Song: When Levon Sings Artist: Willie Nile Album: World War Willie Label: River House Records / Virtual Genre: Rock/Pop Styles: Rock Again, the download page is http://www.emusic.com/dailydownloads/toolbar/main.html. I'm hitting the sack now, but after I get up for the day I'll check to see if anyone else has posted news that it has been fixed. If no one has, I'll try to download it again and let you all know if the problem has been fixed. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-14-2016 at 12:13 AM. |

A comment about the music itself . . . . in my opinion the song genre and/or style is a mixture of rock, country, and pop, and maybe a little folk thrown in. With that not being my taste in music, I struggle to think of a similar song to compare it to or an artist to compare to this one (who was unknown to me until I saw this deal). The tempo is quick. The tune is real "catchy." I think that the song has hit potential. |

They did an excellent job too. So I would compare it to "The Band". They pretty much backed everyone in the late 60's and early 70's. They backed Bob Dylan for a while. Their best album is The Last Waltz. |

Would "The Band" be considered a group of "studio musicians"? If so, I am familiar with the concept. Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (aka "The Swampers") also did a huge amount of that kind of work, for a lot of artists, during that period of time. "The Band" may have done backup singing, though, where The Swampers didn't. |

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Band They were always "the band" to various front men and so the name stuck. They just played little venues like the Monterey Pop Festival and on that farm in New York. Here are some that they played with. massive "farewell concert" known as The Last Waltz. Following an October 30th appearance on Saturday Night Live, the event was held on November 25 (Thanksgiving Day) of 1976 at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, California,[31] and featured a horn section with arrangements by Allen Toussaint and a stellar list of guests, including Canadian artists Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. Two of the guests were fundamental to the Band's existence and growth: Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan. Other guests they admired (and in most cases had worked with before) included Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood, Bobby Charles, Neil Diamond, and Paul Butterfield. The concert was recorded by Robertson's friend, filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Their songs include The Weight, Up on Cripple Creek and The Night they drove old Dixie down. So no they were not studio musicians. They were also discussed in "Rock Music in American History. " That was an actual college course. |

Frank toured some but I don't think Virgil did. Now my great-grandmother told my mother that she remembered her uncles coming over to play. Frank and Virgil were her uncles. |

Here's the eMusic free track of the day. I was not able to download it just now, however. If and when I am able to download it, I will make another post or update this one.

It is now possible to download what is supposed to be the track above, from http://www.emusic.com/dailydownloads/toolbar/main.html. However, it downloads as an .emx file. My computer doesn't recognize it; I don't recognize it. I'm starting to get all of these free music websites and offers all mixed up in my head, but I think that eMusic is the same one who a day or two ago had a free download, but for quite a time during the day was non-functioning/non-functional. Then, when it did function, it gave a file then, too, which was unusable because of its file type (which was not .emx but a different one). Just now, when I went to eMusic to see if the download was functioning/functional, I forgot to log in. I clicked on the link in the drop-down menu for the daily download. The website sent me to this webpage instead, which is an advertisement for their subscription service. When I logged in and followed the same procedure to try to get to the daily download webpage, I got a different webpage advertising their subscription service! At neither landing page (splash page or whatever it's called) was there an apparent way to get away from it and go to the download webpage! I could have just gone to the webpage http://www.emusic.com/dailydownloads/toolbar/main.html, but that shouldn't be necessary, in my way of thinking. Maybe the rest of eMusic.com is okay, but there are just too many hassles with eMusic.com's daily download. And, the music, so far, has not been from new or obscure artists, not the popular ones. It's just not worth the trouble, in my way of thinking. I'm sorry that I told you all about the website. I won't be posting anything about them anymore. |
