@joblack that makes sense of course. I'm hoping that with the quick sell-out of the first batch Onyx sees enough interest in the device. Ironically, if there won't be a Plus successor sometime later this year I would probably get the Max as is right now.

Cheers to Onyx for staying with the digitizer pen. Love that stuff. BUT, why can't they have a 6 inch tablet with dual touch!? That would be awesome. Like a little notepad.

I still use my pocket edges for notes and nothing really beats them to this DAY! Responsive, save to PDF, multiple pages, etc. And, FYI I don't trust Onyx touch screens since the T-68 Lynx was so Terrible that I purchased a Boyue T-62 (much better responsiveness and touch accuracy). I know they are using those single core A-9's partially for battery life (6 year old processors!), BUT also for cheapness. Other newer processors have better functionality for the Android system.

I can always do what I did before. Order from Amazon. If I don't like it, return it!
The 13.3 seems pretty big (great for reading pages in their fullness, which is neat). I'll be interested to hear reviews on the N-96's (both versions). Probably go with the 9.7. I'd be more impressed if I saw a notebook paper layout on their notetaking app...

+1

I'm really looking forward to feedback about the annotation and notetaking the Max can do out of the box.

My old (big) eDGe still does a good job and the features of the original software are alright. And the responsiveness of the Max in notetaking doesn't seem to be above that of the eDGe, if one can judge that from the videos we have seen so far.

So, Onyx would have to offer something to convince me. And even if one could work with additional apps: Those always lag and nag in some way, if used on a device with some kind of eink-display.

Ok I had only a few minutes to test it (I am still at work). Don't know how to attach pictures without having to upload it somewhere else.

  • The device reacts very fast to pen touches
  • Samsung MicroSDXC 128GB EVO Plus UHS-I Grade 1 Class 10 with FAT32 format works
  • The screen looks very nice, especially with enabled dithering
  • It's really fun to work with huge PDFs

Update: I have attached a first picture. I have used a DIN A4 advanced math script.

Additionally I have zoomed in a little bit so that I don't have the white spaces on the left and right side.

There is a one Euro coin for a size comparison.

Sounds good! Hope you enjoy using it.

To upload pictures from your own PC, click the "Go Advanced" button on the post editor, then "Manage Attachments", and you can upload pictures from there.

Initial Setup

I just got mine today as well. I'm not huge on unboxing videos, but I'll post up my impressions and answer as many questions as I can.
  • Power Up: On first power up, you first go through a bunch of setup menus: language, screen timeout, power off timeout, network inactivity, time zone, set up date and time.
  • Network Setup: First thing I did was turn on WiFi. It looks like it doesn't support 5.0GHz wireless.
  • External microSD Card: Putting in a 128GB Sandisk Ultra microSDHC card initially gave me a "damaged SD card" message on the screen. Not surprising, given that it was formatted exFAT. I used guiformat to reformat the card as FAT32. It took a few seconds to mount the card, but afterward, the Storage settings shows me the following:
    • [Internal] Storage: 16 GB Total Space, 11.73 GB Available
    • SD Card: 119 GB Total Space, 119 GB Available
  • Screen Size: By my measurements, it's 8" W x 10 5/8" H.

I still haven't figured out how to install applications over the network yet, but I'll be doing some testing out when I can.

Does it have USB host capabilities?
(e.g. external keyboard and/or external USB storage)?

Best,

Hi joblack,

could You please measure the thickness (Onyx-international says ´only 7.5 mm thick´ whereas in ereader-store a value of 8.4 mm is mentioned)?
How´s the PDF annotation (lag, accuracy, saving (is it automatically saved when You close the document, what´s the quality (e.g. could one annotate say a thesis and then send it to his/her supervisor)))?
Thanks!

Unfortunately I have no measurement tool that would find out if it's either 7.5 or 8.4 mm thick. It's pretty thin and lightweight but that thickness questions was not on my top 10 list of questions.

You could send me a link to a PDF thesis and I might find the time to check it out.
