I certainly wouldn't say that the PW1 was "dire" in any way. Was it as good as current illuminated eInk devices? No, it's wasn't, but that's not a reasonable expectation. It was a huge improvement over the previous unilluminated Kindle Touch.

I just got a reconditioned PW from Amazon. Not sure which generation. It has slight shadows across the bottom which I find especially visible and distracting when the light is at a moderate setting in a dim room. It looks like flood light shadows.
That plus the lack of buttons makes me want to hope for an upgraded Voyage in the near future, especially since I may been commuting by train again with time to eye-read.

If it says "Kindle" on the large logo on the back it's a PW1; if it says "Amazon" it's a PW2.

The PW3 is the PW2 with 4gigs of storage and a 300dpi Carta screen.

Apparently the 3rd gen has the front "kindle" logo in black, while the 2nd has it in white. Both of the PWs in my house are 2nd gen, and both have the bottom shadows. I wonder if 3rd gen or Voyage is different.

The PW3 has the same lighting system (and the same shadows) as the PW2. The Voyage uses a different lighting system and has no shadows.

I think Amazon oversold the Paperwhite as "flawless" and it came as a disappointment to many, especially if you already had previous e-ink devices like the KK. I'm sure some people do not mind the PW1 screen, but in dim light with the light down on the PW1 the screen looks yellow to me, and I have the bottom shadows, and the milky layer between the surface and text. I probably would have been much happier with just a good reading light and keeping the KK or even just use the basic Kindle.
I'm curious to see if there will be a new e-ink device from Amazon, I'm kind of surprised the e-ink devices are not going down in price compared to tablets, indeed they now have the Voyage at what is a very high price to me. I spent that much on a 13" Chromebook this year that I'm running Linux on as a full fledged laptop, so to me it seems overpriced, though I'm sure it is nice, and the Voyage sounds like what the Paperwhite was promised to be and should have been.

My Paperwhite 1 is fine too, and I won't be replacing it with a newer Paperwhite, unless it obtains some perks from the Voyage, mainly the flush screen and the magnesium housing. I don't need the light sensor or the haptic buttons, the button on the back, or a weirdly shaped back (if the Voyage has that; I don't know). These elements only make for weird looking cases with holes in them and cutouts everywhere.

Definitely true of the PW1. The pre-release advertisements were misleading to the point of outright deception, which made the reception of a flawed product even worse. But then, they couldn't show the PW1 light as it REALLY was.

My PW1's light was entirely satisfactory. What problem did you have with yours?
