Thank you for all the nice and interesting reactions. Anyone else? Remember the thread is just "whatever's in your notebook", not just drawings. We even had an interesting conversation strike up because Patricia posted her grocery list! P.S. Yes, Zee - girl floating in water. |

"inadvertent moustache" and "And still you will not come - it makes no difference how loud I call your name since you've been gone" and "Beguiled by garbage smells, you're momentarily distracted from your dinner bowl again" (For those not knowing, I should state the usual "I have dogs" at this point, though it does not apply to the first) Cheers, Marc | |

well, you do whatever you think is best. at taylor's request (it's true he's been doing all the heavy lifting in this thread lately) here are my latest (totally uninteresting, artistically unredeeming) excerpts (sorry, no poems. just a couple of word snapshots) : 1. B. --> flamants roses à cause des crevettes ? carottes - ß carotène (B. --> flamingoes pink because of shrimp ?* carrots - ß carotene) *i wrote that down so i would remember to look it up when i got home : it was the subject of a minor disagreement between me and a friend in a café. but i forgot anyway. now that i've reminded myself and have access to wikipedia i should check. a restaurant i saw the other day in the ménilmontant neighborhood : "sushi and bagels". paris is nothing if not cosmopolitan, but that's still an unexpected combination. |

update : according to wikipedia, flamingos eat (among other things) crustaceans (like shrimp) "dont l'artemia, riche en carotène, qui intensifie ou prolonge la couleur rose du plumage." ("including artemia, rich in carotene, which intensifies or prolongs the pink colour of the plumage.") yes !!!! i was right !!! my friend owes me a drink.

I spent a couple of late afternoons last week having beer sitting at a sidewalk pub in Amsterdam away from the tourists. The lovely interactive chaos of humanity as people walked or cycled by was mesmerizing. All were almost palpably happy in striking contrast to the typical angry rush of Americans. Each was alive. Friends meeting friends. Strangers engaging strangers. The numerous cycle collisions barely avoided at the intersection. The lady riding by with here eyes keenly on the horizon as her four dogs played in the low wooden basket in front. The retiree in his brown suit coat and thin but neat pants and socks headed maybe for the market. It helped the atmosphere for me some that I had little idea what they were saying (my Dutch is not quite as good as my French). I sat for hours doing nothing but soaking it all in. Humanity can be a great place to visit and Amsterdam is a perfect place to experience it. In some respects, this place is like that, too. The sparks of life are too good to pass up. Thank you, PH, ZP, and Marc.

that's really lovely, vr ! thanks. i'm glad you had such a beautiful experience in amsterdam ; one of my favorite things to do is sit in a café and watch the people going by, especially in summer since there are more of them. and you are right, this place is teeming with an amazing microcosm of social, artistic and intellectual activity. we have really some privileged interactions around this place and i too am grateful for it. i'd love to hear your dutch translations, if your dutch is almost as good as your french. |

Oh, don't be modest. The trick is to be observant, which most people are not, I think. Who else would notice, on this busy street, one little dog shaking itself?

Yesterday GeoffC used the word "purloin"in a response to me. It stuck in my head and I ended up with this alliterative concoction. particular about purloining paintings that properly present my personal profile and perspective Dreamer |
