Shadows ARE a defect
Quote:
So far as "pinholes" go, with the normal lighting of 22 out of 24 they should not be visible. If you turn the light down to zero, then all kinds of imperfections may show up. Last year most of the color blotches were noticeable on those using low light settings. |

I think the eInk with light might both be manufactured by eInk, or whatever their company is called. If so then Amazon, which is the largest customer, should really pressure them to correct the manufacturing issues. Maybe Amazon should just buy them out and take over the process themselves. Kobo is a very small player so I doubt there is much they can do except complain. On the other hand, if Amazon puts the light layer on themselves then they need to correct the issues.

Normal lighting? Amazon itself says to use the lower light levels when in a dimply lit room.
I don't know what the difference is between the white speck on my screen and the black dot on wlsinwi's screen, but I find that it is more visible the brighter I make the light. Not a problem for me since I prefer the light at a 12 or below. |

I'm not too keen on the idea of Amazon buying out eInk. What would that do to competition? On the other hand, I would like to see eInk face a little competition... but the ereader market is pretty small, so... |

Since this is first impressions I will say this. My PW2 looks great so far. The light is slightly brighter in the top and you can see slight shadows in the bottoms where the cones are. No pinholes for me so far and Ive viewed a vast array of covers.
Overall at this stage I am pretty happy. It took three tries to get a PW1 which was passable without huge noticeable blobs, albeit not perfect. This PW2 definitely has a much superior screen in every way. |

Well it appears again with PW 2 a lack of consistency with screen quality.
Sad.....PW 3 anyone? ![]() Dennis |

I decided to try one amazon replacement, and if that one sucks, I'll get one from Bestbuy - maybe they just have better batches at the moment - maybe it's a coincidence that her BB one is perfect. We'll see. |

PW2 and T2
Got my PW2 today. I'm reasonably impressed. The light is bright, and almost uniform. No pinholes or light leaks anywhere - I have been watching it closely.
The left most LED appears a little brighter, and it's leaving a bit of a purple blotch at any light level, but it's not hugely noticeable. Especially when you compare it to an external light! I think I can live with Palatino, although the sizing options are kind of strange. But I still loathe the Kindle interface. Some pics, including a fun one of the PW2 and Sony T2 with lighted cover. ![]() L-R: PW2 at 7, PW2 at 15, PW2 and T2 - note that both devices have much sharper text display than I was able to focus on in a dark room with no flash, with the PW2 just slightly sharper. And at it's lowest level, the PW2's grey background is identical to the T2's. The White in Paperwhite definitely comes from the light. |

Here is a shot of my PW2. This was at max light in a reasonably dark room taken with my galaxy s3 with no flash.
If you see a blemish let me know well minus it being sideways for some reason |
