Development Ermine experiences

My new PE was waiting for me when I arrived at home last night. I never had any question but that I would be installing Ermine. That went pretty smoothly, but now Store does not work: it says I'm not registered. I did 'feed' it by re-registering, and it worked, but it has again reverted. So okay, I got Amazon App Store and that works ok.

I've attempted to download about 10 apps, 4 refuse to install, the rest run ok. Is that normal? What does it mean?:
- Aldiko
- Kobo
- AIR (didn't think it would)

Tried to d/l Overdrive app directly from overdrive.com, but the download craps out each time. So I don't know if that would work.

When you visit the Entourage site using a PC and look under My Account does your PE show up?

As far as Apps go, since Ermine is a beta release it literally is a crap shoot when it comes to Apps. This is not to say there are not a lot of good Apps out there. Many times you may have to choose an older version of an App to get it to work. For example, you say Kobo didn't work. I have Kobo installed on my PE and it works fine. Overdrive definitely works. You might try downloading it from your library's website. Or maybe just try again. I picked up a Raymond Chandler mp3 audiobook read by Elliott Gould last night from my library (just to see if it works, you know! ) and it sounds fine! The download was a bit slow, but I am used to downloading epubs which are tiny files in comparison.

Could you please elaborate on how you recovered from the WSODs?

My PE has arrived today morning too & is waiting at home (cant wait to get at it) & initially I had also thought of going for Ermine from day one, but since a few more people have been reporting WSODs, I'm really hesitant to upgrade now...I dont live in the US & doubt if I can be bothered with the return shipping if it ever comes to it...

Download this to a thumbdrive and have the instructions handy in case it doesn't go well.
I was able to completely recover and re-update after some things I was doing to it bricked it.
It reinstalled smoothly to it's stock out of the box state, and I then re-upgraded to Ermine again smoothly with no problems.

Thank you for your reply...by 'this' you mean the update.zip file which reverts it back to Dingo, right?

Do you remember what exactly you did before you bricked it??
My understanding is that it has to do with the hibernation mode AFTER upgrading to Ermine, although many people dont have any issues with this...

Unfortunately I don't remember how I recovered, and it's possible it was not actually a WSOD. Since that posting I've not had any issues.

Also managed to get Overdrive Media Console downloaded directly from Overdrive.com using Opera instead of 'Browser'. I would love to use it more (love seeing a pointer/cursor that I can move around using the 'track ball' control), but unfortunately, Opera has not been very stable, tends to crash after a short time with little provocation.

I too was a little panicked when I first read of some other users getting the WSOD and even contemplated downgrading to back to Dingo but, after using Froyo I don't think the WSOD are Ermine related. My son and I have been using our PEs for over a month which were upgraded to Ermine on Day #1 with no real problems. I did have a couple of times when my PE would not come out of hibernate and I had to power down the PE. My son has never had this problem and I haven't seen it recently . I did see the white screen come up a couple of times (and yes it scared me) when trying to come out of the screen timeout when I was pressing the Back Arrow on the tablet, but after I started using the Menu button instead I have not seen this. Ermine is a very stable and worthwhile upgrade on the PE. The default Android browser has never crashed, my camera is not taking green pictures etc. WSOD are not limited to the PE. Users of many other mobile devices (iPod, iPad, Blackberry, MP3 players etc.) have also reported this phenomenon.

Of course, my PE effectively crashed shortly after my earlier posting (having tempted fate to intervene by the 'no problems' statement..), necessitating my first paperclip reset... I could say that everything has been fine since then -- but I will refrain from saying so.

Kewlcat, there's a lot you can do with Dingo. If the risk seems too great you can put off upgrading until you need Ermine for something, or until it gets finalized -- if that ever happens. I didn't upgrade when the first wave hit and went on learning and adding apps and everything. Finally backed everything up and went ahead with the upgrade. I'm glad I did, it went fine, but I'm not sorry for the time I spent in Dingo.

I guess what I'm saying is: Don't let peer pressure drive you into doing something you could regret.

Yes, Filark...I have reached the same conclusion...for now I am going to stick with Dingo at least till we can figure out the exact reasons for the WSOD...or a stable version of Ermine is released (I wish!...touchwood )

I kept telling myself when browsing through these forums, not to get my expectations too high, but couldnt help it....thankfully the device has met with them & so far am just loving the device for what it is...having never owned an ereader before, I cant take my eyes off that gorgeous screen

Not sure if its 'peer pressure' or 'greed'...LOL... maybe we should have a 'Dingo only' thread somewhere...

LOL...sorry to have pushed you into jinxing it...
Maybe the WSODs are a symptom of too much 'Edge love'

I'm finding 'WSOD' are not as fatal as they appear at first. Usually screen lock happens and then once the screen turns off I can turn it back on and everything is good.
