I have £12.66 promotional credit to spend at Amazon before 31st August. Luckily, I've only spent £11.44 so far this month, so if I only buy at Amazon, I'll keep within my £25 budget - by £0.90!

I think I shall wait and keep an eye on daily deals, and then just buy things from my wishlist on the 31st if nothing's turned up by then.

I've just gone into the red again by buying an omnibus and a collection in paper from abebooks. Every time I get slightly ahead of my TBR I seem to take that as permission to buy some more books.

Been there, done (do) that.

Well, at least the struggle helps keep it in check. Just think where you'd be if you weren't trying.

Quite! As it is, I very nearly have my TBR back to where it was at the start of the year.

Of course, I do have some expiring credit at Amazon that I'll have to spend before the end of this month....

Me, too. But I'm lucky; I don't count it because there's no additional outlay, or at least only a trivial one so as to leave nothing behind.

I will admit that I triple-count a tad. As in:

"I can offset the cost of Prime by getting no-rush digital credits!"

"Oh, I can reduce the cost of this item by taking the no-rush credit!"

"Ooh! Free book!"

Well, at least I know I'm doing it and the sums involved are minor in the grand scheme. Cheap entertainment.

I'm stricter - I count the credits as money spent on books. Otherwise I'd be far too tempted to get credits as 'free money'.

A useful tactic for me has been to check my local library ebook collection before hitting the 'buy' button. If the yearned-for book is available there, I either put it on hold or on a wishlist. It's easier since I've realized I've paid hundreds of dollars for books on sale that I may never have time to read.

The other useful, although accidental, tactic was to get a concussion that lingered on. Although I think the symptoms are now gone, I'm still having a heck of a time focusing. Really reduced the obsession to collect books. Well, not really, but we're not going to delve into my print cookbook collection. Interesting how obsessive and addictive-type characteristics so easily morph from one object to another as the first is brought under control. Embarrassing, but apparently I am in the right thread.

As if it was needed, another excellent reason for me to avoid getting a concussion!

I hope your reading focus comes back soon.

Yes. Very bad idea. Glad I could clear up any possible doubts. A good way to avoid a concussion is to not go on a solo 4-wheel drive, 7-week exploration of Death Valley and environs beginning four months after a total knee replacement. Just in case you might be thinking of it. Sometimes readers should stick to reading.

My purchases have gone down, but my freebie acquisitions have gone up and my reading rate has dropped through the floor. A large part of this is that I've taken on some editing and beta-reading that has devoured a lot of my leisure time. (Hard to count something as a "read" when it's a new unpublished draft...)

I did just buy and begin Simon R. Green's new one, though. Full price (Big Five), but MMPB-priced and I know I'll enjoy it. I've been leaving several $11+ books on the wish list, though - waiting for either the Urge To Read to rise or the price to drop.

I only add a freebie to my TBR if I would have bought it as a discounted non-freebie.
