Good news indeed! I'm hoping my steroid and other drops will be dropped tomorrow with my follow up appointment. Or at least tapered off. I'm really tired of 4 different drops on 3 different schedules and 4 times a day. Fortunately, I didn't have the sleep face down requirement. That would have been h**l.

I didn't get one and frankly it's been h*** trying to sleep. I tried an inflatable pillow with a hole for the face to rest in but it was not restful at all.

Holy s**t. I am absolutely, positively unable to sleep face-down. Can't do it--I have arthritis in my spine which means that 2 minutes after I roll over, to try to sleep face down (I was a stomach sleeper my entire adult life, until this happened), my back starts to HURT and within 30 minutes, if not less, I'm in agony. (I'm not saying that my problems are speshul. They're not. But they're vexatious, as it's actually a shockingly small amount of arthritis--in just the right g***amned spot.)

You have my sincere sympathies. That's...bad.

I know you guys think I make this stuff up, but...

A gentleman has been emailing us, the last few days, asking for "help" uploading his "book" (sorry for the surfeit of quotation marks) to KDP/Amazon, to sell it. I asked, several times, for the file so that I could see what the problem is/was.

FINALLY, today, he sends...well, what appears to be one page of it.

It's made in Google SHEETS. Each and every line, is a paragraph, apparently. There are no first-line-indents, no space between the...apparent paragraphs.

The font is 2.63pt Arial. 2.63point! I had to zoom it to 300%, to begin to read it. And that's with my cheaters on.

I confess, I'm pretty aghast. I would say speechless, but obviously, here I am kvetching about it, so not speechless.

I mean, do people not use word processors, ever? I just had a lady that was still--in 2022!!!--using MSFT WORKS, which I think has been d/ced for what, 30 years? And now this. This one takes the damn cake.

You know, if her 386 PC is still working for her and she's happy using Works, then I respect that. Heck, she can just save it as RTF, so why change.

If she's got a 386PC, I'll eat my damn bunny slippers. I mean, sure, I guess not everybody needs WORD. Hell, George RR Martin notoriously still uses Wordstar, amirite? (Only the most self-centered prats...well...forget I said that.)

But the SHEETS? When DOCS was right the hell there? AT 2.xx point?

By the gods, it's a good thing that I gave up drinking 30+ years ago, that's all I gotta say.

But if you set the magnification to 800%, 2.xx pt is easy to read.

My father tends to use spread sheets for everything. Mostly it's at least semi-appropriate but sometimes I just wonder what he was thinking when using Calc (he's too cheap to buy MS Office, so he uses Open Office). Luckily he doesn't use a tiny font.

Yesterday my last customer threw a bit of a temper tantrum. He wanted 2 meters of transparent electrical wire for a light fixture. And not just transparent plastic (we have that with either copper coloured or a silver coloured wired inside), no he wanted the wiring inside to also be transparent....

"can't they make the copper wires from plastic" he asked me.

Sigh. It was a perfect illustration for how all of yesterday went, though.

He did ask. Does it surprise me? No. A lot of people have trouble grasping the concept of electrical conduction. Not understanding why plastic/wooden/glass/etc light fixtures do not have to be grounded and why a lot of metal ones do have to be grounded. Even after explaining it.

I do blame our education system. We do get some education about electricity. During physics they go into the details (eg how does an electrical system in house works in diagrams) without teaching the basics (like conductivity). During the first couple of years in secondary school they also teach a class where you do some wood and metal work and other manual tasks, like design a model of a house of cardboard. I think that this is the best class to teach some more practical things; like how to change a plug, install a wall socket, etc.

Mind you, my physics teacher was convinced that halogen and CFL was exactly the same thing. So it doesn't surprise me people don't know the basics like what conducts electricity and what doesn't.

Y'see, this here is how I view one of the main differences between ignorance and stupidity.

I don't blame a random person for being ignorant of the difference between incandescent and florescent lighting. No reason for most people to know or care. And if for some reason they want or need to know, they can find out.

But for someone like a physics teacher, who SHOULD know, but not only DOESN'T know, but also INCORRECTLY BELIEVES he does knows...
I hope you double checked everything else that teacher "taught" you. How can you trust him?

p.s. Light up a CFL bulb and a halogen bulb for a few minutes, and unscrew the CFL bare handed. Tell your teacher that if he's sure they are the same, he should do the same with the halogen....

Well, as we ALL know, 99% of the population thinks that electricity is magic. Comes right out of the wall, right? PFM. Most people don't give a second thought to how it's created for them to plug in and use. Just magic! "Electricity-armus!"
