When a publication you trust is found to have used AI to write an article summary...about an AI-related incident.

Because stock Notepad was out of security vulnerabilities on its own so they had to create new ones. |

What is wrong with a basic text editor like Notepad? One of the irritants I have with the version of Notepad that comes with Windows 11 is that each time you open/create a text file it doesn't close it. It used to be that you had to save one text file before you could open/create a new one. Now it just keeps adding tabs and each text file is not closed and saved until you deliberately close it.

I wouldn't know, it's been so long since I touched it.
The biggest problem was that it used CR/LF for line endings. I don't know if they've seen the light. Most any usage of files nowadays allows a "*nix" ending of LF even if they don't advertise it. On Android I have my own test editor. It's very simple. The one thing it does is save a new version every time it closes. The idea is that it's mostly for collecting one-offs and making sure that I don't lose anything. |

But Textpad was far superior as a text editor on NT 4.0. Then later on XP the Notepad++, which I have a 2016 version on Win10. I used Notepad++ on WINE for a while on Linux from November 2016, but switched to KATE (native) later. Huge choice of good GUI and console editors* on Linux apart from actual wordprocessing. I occasionally use Jota or Jota+ on all Android since 4.x. It sort of autosaves and is reasonably configurable. Before Android added non-USA English keyboards I also had a Keyboard Helper Pro (for years the only Android program I bought) which was needed for USB or BT external keyboards.

I just got bit on the bee-hind with a bug from Notepad++.
I was redoing some code and slinging the hash like a Waffle House line cook at 2 AM. Suddenly the Undo/Redo went beserk. No combination of Ctrl-Y and Ctrl-Z could get me back to where I was newer than an hour ago. After ascertaining that this was the problem I concentrated more on doing a "brain dump" to recover my work. Apparently this was a regression bug in my just-installed security fix 8.8.9: Code:
Fix column mode edit undo regression (introduced in v8.8.9). (Fix #17295, #17272, #16784) |
