We have an electro technical store. We're known as the lightbulb store locally. But we also sell wall sockets, (dimmer) switches, parts to make or repair your own light fixture, fuse boxes, etc.

The drills I can understand, but we don't have much in tools or hardware. But there's a great hardware store nearby. The cork screw was a new one. There are two stores that sell them. One is seven doors up the street and the other a two minute walk down the street.

Yesterday my father was moved to a rehab center. And he's a lot more positive compared to when he was in the hospital. His physical therapist was surprised how well my father can move; he has no problem getting out of bed or standing up from a chair. He mainly has to work on his stamina.

He's also allowed to get out of his room, though he will have use a walker for now. But in the hospital he was only allowed to get out of his room if someone was with him. Which means he can now move around on his own more easily.

His room is simple compared to those in other rehab centers in the city. But he's got his own bathroom and he doesn't have to share. For six and a half weeks he's had shared rooms, so now he can go to sleep when he wants to, watch Netflix without wearing headphones and move about whenever he wants to.

Best of all, the food (at least last night's) was a lot better than what he got in the hospital.

It's my turn to visit tonight, so I'm curious about the center. It's a bit further away, but still an easy bike ride.

It's good to hear he will be happier there. My experience with rehab places is the same as yours, more privacy, less restrictions. My mother-in-law spent time in a couple of different places over the years, one for 60 days after a back surgery. It was very beneficial for her. She grumbled about it at first, but fairly quickly realized how it was helping her regain her strength.

I forgot myself and looked at the comment section of a Youtube video today.

I distress over the future of civilization.

It's always stunning to me that so many people seem so desperate to display ignorance and stupidity in any possible public forum. And Youtube seems to encourage this as "engagement," so content creators encourage it too.

Comments on news sites, too.

Though I admit I always laugh when I see people going "defund the CBC!" in the comments of CBC news articles.

The scary part of that is that the leading candidate for the Opposition leadership has that as part of his platform!

My father's been in the rehab center for just over a week now. And it's a bit of a disappointment. He gets physical therapy three times a week. Which consists of walking up and down the stairs several times, riding on an exercise bike for five minutes and a couple of other exercises.

He isn't allowed to go into the hallway without his walker, because of his dizzy spells. Which he hadn't had since Tuesday. He doesn't lean on the walker anymore. He is also finally gaining weight again. But he's incredibly bored. On days he doesn't have physical therapy he does the prescribed exercises and spends the rest of his time streaming TV and watching Netflix. Everything is done for him; cooking, drinks are brought, etc. He doesn't have much contact with other patients, they're too old according to him.

Tomorrow my sister is joining him for a consultation with the doctor. He wants to go home ASAP, the rehab center was aiming for around the 15th. My father's physical therapist tempered his expectations, because although he's had to great days earlier in the week, and before that, he regularly had one or two bad days. Where he felt nauseous and dizzy. So he might have to stay longer than he wants to make sure he is consistently feeling good.

It's true that at home he'll be doing more; making his own breakfast and lunch, getting his own drinks, etc. But I'm afraid when he gets home he doesn't do his exercises. That happened with the physical therapy he got for his knee; he just didn't do his homework exercises. So I'm hoping that when he is allowed to go home he will have to continue to work with a physical therapist several times a week, that way he will at least get some exercise even if he doesn't do what is prescribed.

I'm also afraid that when he gets home he will just sit behind his computer and not help out. I told my mother that I want him to help out whilst I'm running the store on my own. I don't expect him to do any heavy chores, at least not when he is still healing and getting his strength back. But little things and making my parents' bed, making my mother coffee in the morning, feeding the cats and putting on dinner are not too much to ask I think. But I'm afraid that's wishful thinking.

I'm supposed to go on a long walking weekend with my sister on the 20th. And I know my sister is right in saying that it will be good for my parents to be home alone for a couple of day. That they are being forced to make do on their own. And whilst both my parents say I should go, I also know that they will (unconsciously) will guilt trip me for going away.

In other words; I'm feeling stressed about the whole situation at the moment.

Can you be SURE of a visiting nurse or therapist? When we had a very similar situation with my sister, she had a visiting therapist, who made SURE, for months, that she did her therapy not less than 2x weekly and she demanded that my sister keep and give her a journal of her exercises and therapy movements. It kept her going. Perhaps something like that could work on your dad, since apparently, wifely and daughterly nagging appears not to work?

He's coming home on Thursday, and from Friday a nurse will visit each morning, but only to put on his compression sock. I'm hoping the rehab center will also require a physical therapist to visit once or twice a week. But I doubt that will happen.

He says he wants to continue with exercises. But I know it's easy for him to find excuses not to do it. Or he wants to do too much, too quickly and gets demotivated when that backfires. Nagging has the opposite effect on him. And at the moment I just don't have the energy to get into fights with him.

In two or three weeks his heart recovery program will start. Which is usually group physical therapy twice a week and group talks to share your experiences with others who went through the same thing. When that program starts he will at least get PT twice a week.

I just found out that the 26th is Ascension Day, which is a bank/public holiday in the Netherlands. My sister and I are going away for our walking weekend from the 20th until the 24th. So the store's closed on the 21st and the 24th. I'm now tempted to also keep the store closed on the 25th, so that I have six days off. But I know my father will never agree to that. He already has problems with closing the store two days, let alone three days.

Y'know, something I learnt the hard way, from my family members is that you can't force their own responsibilities on them. You can't make someone get well. You can't make them do their P/T, or to quit smoking or lose weight, etc. All you can do is try to be supportive (no matter how irked or irritated you may be for whatever reason) and hope for the best. Everything else is you trying to maintain the illusion of control and making YOURSELF miserable. Don't let your inner control freak make you miserable, if you are not the one who is meant to be exercising, quitting smoking, dieting, whatever.

IME, FWIW.

I had one of my regular eye injections for Diabetic Macular Edema last Thursday (just right eye this month). Friday all day I was feeling an itch in the eye, which I assumed was irritation from the injection. Had a hard time sleeping Friday night with a very teary eye.

Saturday morning wiped the eye down with a hot cloth and shut the left eye to see how the right eye was. NOTHING; just a white cloud.

Went to the local Emergency where the Dr on duty thought I'd damaged the outside of the eye. She arranged for me to see a specialist @4 pm half way across town. I tried suggesting that maybe I should head down town to the Emerg at the hospital where the DME is being treated but she saw no point

Saw the specialist who instantly said bad infection in the eye, and got in touch with the Opthalmology Resident at the hospital where the DME is being treated. Git on the subway to head downtown only to encounter shuttle buses due to construction!

Finally got down town, found the resident who in turn called the Ophthalmology Fellow.

After an ultrasound, examinations of the eye, an eye infection (endophthalmitis) was confirmed.

Various samples were taken from the eye, antibiotics injected into the eye, and three eye drops and an oral antibiotic prescribed, with a follow-up on Sunday.

Made it home Saturday, and then made it back downtown on Sunday.

Saw the same folks on the Sunday where it was confirmed that the bacteria in the samples was one that the drugs would handle.

Had another followup on Monday with more samples taken and another injection.

Right now waiting for an appointment on Wednesday.

Still can't see. I can see a shadowy movement if you wave a hand in front of the eye, and can see bright areas vs dim areas.

I'm told recovery can be several weeks and there is no certainty of the vision being as good as it was.

Honestly, it almost sounds as though the "regular injection" caused the infection, no?

Yep; an infectiongot in when the regular injection ws given I'm told there is a 1 in 1000 chance. That was the 9th treatment in the right eye, and each time there is also a sample taken for analysis).

Left eye is on a different schedule; it started later; I think it's had 4 shots and is now on a 2 month schedule).

Next right is meant to be late May,and the left early June.

Shall we say I'm nervous about the next round.
