Thanks. I only have a few more of these to get (I get the audiobooks for $1.99). I made a random choice to restrict ebook purchases in this series to $2.99 since I always get the matching audiobook. I've noticed that the pricing for the books without an audiobook are agency pricing (and if they think I'm spending $14.99 for an ebook written in the 80s by a dead author....)

I haven't read any of them yet, so I'm restricting myself to the first 12, for no particular reason at all. I believe I have all of them except for #'s 6 (Killer's Payoff) and 12 (The Heckler).

I first became interested in the books when I saw the Akira Kurosawa movie High and Low, which was loosely based on book #10 (King's Ransom).

I also had someone give me the 87th Precinct TV series on DVD, as a gift.

I hope you like the series! It is one of the really classic police procedural series, with a wide variety of cases, some big and some small, and lots of background storylines about the detectives - and even a few of the criminals. I read pretty much all of them in DTB days, in whatever order I found them in various used bookstores, and I think you're wise to read in order. Although each book does stand alone, lots of minor storylines continue over more than one book, so I would sometimes find myself knowing something I probably shouldn't, or wondering a bit about how some situation arose. Certainly not fatal to read out of order, but more enjoyable in order.

I haven't seen the movie, but IMS, King's Ransom is the one with the two boys (???), and if so, it raises an interesting ethical issue. I can imagine that it made a pretty good movie! Not all of the books in the series are going to pose such knotty issues to think about though...

I hadn't realized that the audiobooks were that inexpensive. I'm not a big consumer of audiobooks, but it might be enjoyable to pick up a few at those prices, even just to listen to while doing chores around the house. Thanks for the tip!

The Worried Widow is the 11th in the Keith Calder series by Gerald Hammond. It is free right now at Kindle US and UK. I have been staying with friends out in the boonies, with no internet, so this has been free for almost a day already, so grab it really fast if you want it.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HCK9CY9
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Worried-Wid...dp/B07HCK9CY9/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Keith Calder—ex-poacher, gunsmith, and sometime sleuth—returns to solve a sinister crime.

The worried widow is Jenny Hendrickson, whose husband has just been found fatally shot, apparently by his own hand. Jenny doesn’t believe that Sam Hendrickson would have committed suicide, and pleads with Keith to look into the case.

Against his better judgement—he was no great admirer of the deceased, a hard-nosed union boss—Keith allows his wife Molly to persuade him to heed the widow’s request. Soon he begins to think that Jenny may be right and the coroner’s verdict wrong. When his old enemy, Inspector Munro, hints the police aren’t entirely satisfied with the verdict, Keith is far too intrigued to let the matter drop.

But he runs up against a seeming dead end: While several people were nearby when the fatal shot was heard, no one apparently had the opportunity to kill Hendrickson. Calder’s natural stubbornness prevails, however, and the outcome is a puzzle skilfully solved.

Gerald Hammond’s many readers have come to expect from him a wealth of ballistic expertise, witty entertainment, and a satisfying mystery. The Worried Widow will not disappoint them.

The Gold Curse is the fourth in the Norma and Alexander Gold series by Herbert Resnicow. It is free right now at Kindle US and UK. As above, it has been free for a while, so grab it fast if you want it...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWSFAIY
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gold-Curse-...dp/B01LWSFAIY/

Spoiler:
Quote:
A true original, unique, artful and very witty, with sharp, tart, delicious characters. First time a mystery made me laugh in decades’ – Harold Q. Masur, author of The Broker

A night to remember…

When Alexander and Norma Gold decide to attend a charity Opera event, in support of Tay-Sachs, raising money for Genetic Diseases, neither Alexander, nor Norma, are ready for the events that unfold that evening.

Aimed at billionaires, the over-priced seats are justified by the fact that well-known actors and singers will be on stage for the popular Rigoletto.

To Alexander, a private investigator, the plot is one that he finds hard to believe: how can a person be stabbed through the heart, then, ten minutes later, sing in the finale?

With seats costing double their usual price, and with his famous actors and singers, director Jan Valczyk intends to give the audience a premium show.

This show will be as real as it can get in theatre. And that’s the truth.

In the darkness, as requested by the director, the audience watch and listen.

But for a murderer, this is the perfect setting…

As the story unfolds on stage, Alexander and Norma start to notice the undercurrents between the actors.

With Julia Baron predicting certain tragedies, the Gold’s chalk the undercurrents as part of the acting.

Suddenly, Thea Malabar is dead… and not just in the show.

How could this have happened? And why?

Horrified by the killing of his former love, Minos Zacharias retains the services of A.I.K Inc., Private Investigators, for a rather substantial sum.

As Alexander and Norma start to investigate, alongside the police investigation, they uncover little more than the underlying suspicious nature behind Thea's death.

Could there be a link between Thea and Helen’s deaths?

With no solid leads to follow, and with everyone seen as a potential suspect, the Gold’s are at a standstill. Playing each suspect off against each other is the only way forward.

Or is there one other option they can try before they admit they are no closer to finding the killer than the police?

The Gold Curse is a thriller filled with all the intrigue and drama of a real-life theatre performance.

I guess since I last posted this, Bluebird, Bluebird also won an Anthony and a Steel Dagger, and was a finalist for a couple of other awards, per SYKM. So if you missed this last time, you might want to grab it this time. And I guess I'll move it up on my TBR list .

Bluebird, Bluebird has dropped to $2.99 again at Kindle US, and the link below is still good. As of now, it has not dropped at Kobo US, but you can use the link below to price check if you wish.

I really liked the first handful of titles in Michael McGarrity's excellent (IMO) Kevin Kerney series, which I read back in DTB days. (Note: I'm a little biased since I like mysteries set in the American southwest, where my dad's family is from...) This series rarely goes on sale, and titles are mostly ridiculously priced for old backlist at $7.99 and up, with some over $10, so it's nice that Dead or Alive has now dropped even further to $0.99 at Kindle US. It has not dropped to $0.99 at Kobo US, at least as of now, but both links below are still good, so you can use the Kobo one to price check if you wish.

Also, just a note, Dead or Alive is no longer the most recent title in the series - there is a later title, Residue, which was published last year after a ten year (!!!) gap.

Every title in C. J. Sansom's Matthew Shardlake series has been nominated for a Historical Dagger (per SYKM), a couple have been nominated for other awards too, and the second title actually won the Historical Dagger. Now Heartstone, the fifth title in the series, has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004FPYZT8

Spoiler:
Quote:
The epic fifth novel in the Matthew Shardlake Tudor Mystery series by the bestselling author of Winter in Madrid and Dominion

Summer 1545. A massive French armada is threatening England, and Henry VIII has plunged the country into economic crisis to finance the war. Meanwhile, an old servant of Queen Catherine Parr has asked Matthew Shardlake to investigate claims of "monstrous" wrongs committed against a young ward of the court. As the French fleet approaches, Shardlake's inquiries reunite him with an old friend-and an old enemy close to the throne.

Although I've never liked Tom Clancy's politics, which sometimes bleed over a fair amount into his books, especially the later ones, he does write rip-roaring thrillers. Debt of Honor is the 6th (SYKM) or 7th (blurb) in Clancy's Jack Ryan series, and it has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

minor spoiler:
Spoiler:
IMS, I loved the "do-over" in this one

Spoiler:
Quote:
THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING JACK RYAN NOVEL

“A harrowing tale…Clancy keeps you riveted with political intrigue and military maneuvering [and] sends you rushing headlong to the book’s stunning conclusion.”—USA Today

Bestselling author Tom Clancy takes a bold, incisive look at what our nation’s leaders are calling “the new world order.” The time and place: a world at peace, where yesterday’s enemies are tomorrow’s allies. The players: Jack Ryan as the new U.S. President’s National Security Advisor, and his CIA colleagues, John Clark and Domingo Chavez. The crisis: a shocking chain of events in which the wages of peace are as fully complex—and devastating—as those of war.
