That explains why it was kinda hazy here (~35 miles SW of Chicago) today and sunrises/sunsets have been kinda red recently.

Yup. I've been lucky so far, given that I'm right on the West Coast, and so far there haven't been serious ones on Vancouver Island. But I'm keeping the air purifier on full time, just in case.

More than 2,000 miles away, I believe, maybe closer to 3000.

Friends and relatives living in New Zealand are used to this. Bushfire season in Australia, some 2000 km away, often generates spectacular sunrises/sets and if the wind and weather are right smoky haze is apparently not uncommon.

Yes, in NJ we're more than 2000 miles from the biggest fires.

Perhaps you are importing some of the smoke and particles from north of the Canada/US border? Taking a look at the forest fire map for Ontario, you are less than 2000KM from the heart of the fire area.

I haven't noticed any air issues, but maybe it's a good thing I've only been outside for, like, 12 seconds total in the last week.

Oh, I'm sure the smoke is mixing in from all over.

Between yesterday's strong thunderstorms and shifting weather fronts there was less smoke in the sky today. The blue was only slightly muted -- but the sunset is getting started right now, and it's redder than usual.

Well, I thought I had received every possible phone scam call possible, from your SS card being used in a fraudulent manner to the huge new charge to your Amazon account, but today I got a message from the Customs/Border Patrol Service - it seems a package stuffed with drugs with my name on it was seized, and if I didn't contact them immediately I would be arrested.

Yeah, I'm getting a bunch of text message scams "Pick up your Walmart package" and other things. I also got a for-real "workers comp insurance filed for in your name, & changed your address too". To a prior address that actually had been mine 14 years ago. Odd. But my employer got part of that too, so that actually happened, partway at least.

With communication skills and attention to detail degrading as they are, pretty soon we won't be able to recognize the fakes so easily by the bad spelling and grammar.

So that's what I smelled. I thought maybe some crazy people in my neighborhood had started fires in their fireplaces because the 90°F weather was too chilly for them.
