I've been stabbed in the legs, arse, torso and face by bamboo branches, and had multiple bamboo branches whip me in the eyes. I'm covered in leaf-litter, and my shirt looks like I've upended a bucket of water over myself. I'm looking forward to a swim with a pint of Magners (thanks, Am) at hand.

There's something like 1000 species of bamboo. Pretty much all of them grow fast (thus the twice-yearly chop of our "privacy screen"), but not all of them are invasive, as their reputation suggests. The one next door rarely shoots from the bottom, and then generally from within its existing stand. Most sky-rocketing shoots come from existing trunks. It's a bugger to cut (mostly because I have to climb up the top of our two-story roof and lean over the side to get some, and stand on top of the 6' wall to cut from below), but it's thankfully not one where you have to trench it to keep it in place.

The stuff next door grows about three stories tall. Its trunks are about 5cm across. The stand is about a metre wide and, I'd say, 5 metres long. Similarly, in the wind they occasionally knock together with a pleasant noise, due to their hollowness. It's lovely stuff, when it's not grabbing and biting at me and refusing to enter the mulcher/shredder. We don't want rid of it at all, and it's on the neighbours' side anyway. It's nice looking out from our atrium at the vertical pattern of bamboo trunks.

Gotta go! Mulching calls!

DG, I did wonder if perhaps that was a Driver's License photo. It had a certain "institutional" quality about it, and they can make anyone look terrible (and unrecognizable). (I was working on a short story once in which a frustrated expert photographer working in the DMV was using his skills for EEEeeevill....)

I think I heard about that other story, though.

I had a friend in college whose driver's license photo was literally so bad that it got her out of tickets.

She literally looked demon-possessed, think "The Exorcist" but with better skin, actually glowing eyes, and no pea soup.

Just thinking about that photo still kinda freaks me out fifteen years later! (shudder)

I also knew a girl in college (I think we have a theme here) of average looks; but, on her driver's license she looked like a 10! You look directly at her and she seemed normal, nothing outstanding. You take her picture and she was a whole different person. Even her school ID looked great.

What I'm doing: just finished writing the second of the two major essays I needed to have done before class tomorrow (er... today). One is a week late, but at least now it's done!

I still need to write a two-pager for the other class by 3pm, but I can do that during lunch.

(As in, my coach has turned back into a pumpkin... possibly with me in it.
