The most reviewed devices here that seem to meet at least some of these goals are the JE100/JE200, W1060/A81, or the (not-yet-released) Archos 7 Home. (Anyone with any experience with these - will any of them come close???)
I'd go with the SmartQ V7, myself.

Is that the one that already _has_ the English firmware, or does it need to be converted from the Chinese? I'm starting to get confused

As far as I know, all of SmartQ's devices have an English firmware. Teh V7 actually has 3: Linux, Android, and WinCE.

Thanks for the suggestion, I was looking for a good 7" MID too. I just bought a used one on eBay for $200.

I have one of those. It is a very cool little device that runs WinCE 5.0. I actually think it is faster than my SmartQ7. The screen is smaller and the resolution isn't that high, but on a screen that small the resolution is just about right. When I was using it for reading I used AlReader2 and UBook. I would set the arrow keys on the little keyboard for changing pages. I also set the little rocker button along the bottom for changing pages when I had the device in the slide closed position.

At what point does it completely shut down?

When you turn it on, completely disconnected from the computer, does it start up properly? What does the battery charge indicate (in the upper-right corner) - perhaps you need to charge it first?

After it's turned on, and started up properly, if you plug it in to the USB cable (while you are NOT running the firmware upgrade tool), does your computer see it as a drive? Does the front screen of the Delstar turn into a "swirly data" image?

If you then start up the firmware upgrade tool, does it recognize your device? Where did you download the firmware from - is it the latest from today? I believe Scott_T had a problem with that one (at least initially).

Does the firmware tool run all the way to the end and say successful?

jetBook-Lite has eReader DRM support (books from B&N, fictionwise.com and ereader.com websites).

At what point does it completely shut down? a few seconds after it starts the update process

When you turn it on, completely disconnected from the computer, does it start up properly? Yes, I've been able to use it. I downloaded EPUBS, TXT, FB2 files.

What does the battery charge indicate (in the upper-right corner) - perhaps you need to charge it first? fully charged, although at times it has the charging symbol.

After it's turned on, and started up properly, if you plug it in to the USB cable (while you are NOT running the firmware upgrade tool), does your computer see it as a drive?Does the front screen of the Delstar turn into a "swirly data" image? yes & yes

If you then start up the firmware upgrade tool, does it recognize your device? yes

Where did you download the firmware from - is it the latest from today? Yes

Thanks for the answers (can you tell I work in the computer business? )

Are you saying you see the "charging" indicator even when the Delstar isn't plugged in (to either "mains" power or the USB cable)? That would be strange.

When you start up the firmware upgrade, I think the firmware upgrade tool shows some "status" messages to indicate what it's doing - do you see any of those messages? What's the last thing the firmware upgrade tool says it's doing before your Delstar shuts down?

I have the "firmware image" from a few days ago, which I used successfully. If you'd like, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you - I don't know if it will make any difference, but it may be worth a try.

I believe Scott told me he had to reinstall the tool or something to that effect and had to have the reader plugged in while doing it but he got it to run in time.
