The differences can be distressing. I feel odd evey time I go to use the ladies room at an Australian themed Outback Restaurant and the door is labeled "Sheilas".

English has 'hybrid vigor' rather than Habsburg inbreeding.

While I agree completely about the uselessness of the word "lorry" in the US, I don't think it sounds that much like the name Laurie at all.

Ahh but vanilla (proper vanilla, that is, not the synthetic crud that seems to end up in too much foodstuffs - and, I daresay, drinkstuffs) is the second most expensive spice (saffron is the most expensive). And it has a very nice, rich taste (again, the real stuff, yada yada)

Actually, my peridontist (yes, I can no longer go to just a REGULAR dentist, I've moved on to the specialists now) tells me that diet drinks are just as bad if not worse than the sugared drinks. Something to do with the chemicals they use. Since I don't drink pop of any kind, I really didn't pay that much attention other than to note it was bad for your teeth so I could pass the sad news onto my children. Needless to say, they were not happy!

Well, the acidity may have something to do with it as well, but I'm sure the sugar is what the bacteria grow on/in and cause the decay.

All I know is that I drink diet soda constantly and have all my life and have recently had better checkups than every before.

Dunno how the thread got to this topic but there are ways to help satisfy the urge for carbonation, sweetness pretty cheaply. There is this device I have:

http://www.sodaclub.com/

Here is another: http://www.sodastreamusa.com/

But you can make your own flavorings as well as control the total carbonation...I use something called Stevia as a sweetener it is 100% natural and zero carbs and been used for 1000s of years...it has what can be a somewhat odd flavor for some. It can have a slight licorice taste but it is TONS sweeter than sugar or any of the artificial sweeteners...but I learned to like it simply because we consume just way too much sugar (other carbs as well) these days. Just a note...if you do look for stevia in the market beware some brands actually add either sugar, maltodextrin (not good for many people and debatable for diabetics) or artificial sweetener...buy the pure extract/powder...but go VERY easy with it. I buy a bottle of pure stevia powder and I think it is 3-4oz and it will last me about a year or more...costs about $5-$6...and you can bake with it but need to compensate for the lost bulk compared to sugar or other sweetener options.

What I like is I can always have fresh soda ready in an instant. There are even small bottles you can fill, close up and take with you or just store in the fridge.

Also, I KNOW what is in the beverage and know it's all healthy, well, as healthy as food is anymore now that it's nothing more than an assembly line product with dubious genetic heritage... I like to use fresh juices though I have been known to, well, experiment...and not all experiments are, well, edible?!?!

Anyway, just adding there is a safer (for your teeth and stomach as well) way to go...and yeah a bottle of tonic water is OK too but it is still not fresh and will go flat and cost a lot more (I think anyway)...plus I got the cool Penguin looking device because it was fun!!

Yes. In ice cream. In puddings. In *anything* but colas!!! Heck gosh durnit, I'd rather have *saffron* in colas over a predominant vanilla taste. (Of course, to my mind wasting saffron on something as plebian as cola should be a firing-squad offense. )

Far from that simple because it migrated from lounge and appears in thread titles in News and Commentary. So, the usage of the word is imposed on us leaving no choice such as:

Really, why not to use 電子書籍 (as ardeegee suggested)? You cannot read it? You don't understand it? Not your language? Who cares?

And "vanilla" is not an English word either, it's a modified Spanish word ("vainilla") meaning "little pod" (and the spice too, of course). That's another word English speakers wouldn't properly pronounce (something like vy-NEE-yah).
