I'm sorry but dan brown is the only person I can think of who rips his own work off as for craftmanship his is only that he manages to get people to by his books on the basis of his "background research" I'm sorry but five on wikipedia and a bit of a guess is not research and as for taking 6 years to write the last version of his story line that was probably because he was too busy counting his money.

I liked Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code - I don't think Dan Brown is the best writer as far as craft, but he did know how to keep me reading. That said, I love the books by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I think their Agent Pendergast books are a lot more captivating than Brown's, and much better written.

I did find DaVinci Code to be hard to put down, even though I was sure that his ideas were nonsense. It gripped me as a thriller well enough. Angels and Demons was preposterous through and through and I decided not to both with the newest one.

Peter Benioff - City of Thieves. A short novel, powerful and a page turner.

On my own, I have some kind of admiration to Dan Brown for the huge knowledge that he put into his work, it's sometimes amazes me

"Knowledge" might not be the best term. I was under the impression that most of it comes straight from his imagination. He certainly got a lot of facts wrong about France, in the few chapters that I managed to read.

I see ... you are trying to be sarcastic here.

If you know something about computers and/or cryptography try to read his Digital fortress.
It is true, there is some amusing trivia in his books, but after checking some of the facts that I did know I am not sure how much of it is just plain wrong.

You beat me to that by a couple of hours.

As a career computer programmer, I have to say that "Digital Fortress" was midway between hilarious and painful to read because it was so outrageously off base in the technical details.

Try Daemon.
Daniel Suarez not only wrote great, contemporary, fast-paced techno-thrillers (the Daemeon and the sequel), he also managed to get most of his [computer related] technical details right. He checked the technical aspect of the book with a "white hat" hacker community and the result is ... chilling.
If you ever played Doom or Duke Nukem or Quake or Half-life you will love the book.

I thought, "Wow what an amazing coincidence Kacir likes that book too

... Then I thought I'll go buy it. Two shocks. The Kindle version is a jaw dropping USD16.92, and it's not available in Asia Pacific.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned them so far, but I found the Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan vampire books pretty hard to put down (The Strain and The Fall). I'm normally sick to death of vampires but these really refreshed some of the mythology for me.
