Oddly enough, the quarters are different sizes, from 468x641 up to 601x823.

This is likely caused by MobiPocket Creator (or mobigen) processing each image to fit it in ~64KB. The first step is to change the quality of the JPEG, but if the image is still too big it then reduces the size in pixels of the image. So the images probably started out with the same dimensions, but got compressed differently.

That seems likely. I guess the ePUB version will have the full size images.

It seems a shame that they're not tweaking each format to be the best it can be.

My Kindle is at home... are people getting the new version pushed to them? Or, can someone who just bought it confirm that if they delete and redownload, it looks right?

No, no Kindle owner is getting the new version pushed to them. We don't even know that there IS a new Kindle version. Only that the sample appears to have some errors fixed. Someone with a Kindle who has never bought it before would have to buy it for use to make a comparison.

i bought it today for the first time. it appears that most problems are fixed. i'd be happy to compare with anyone who has the first, bad version. post a list of locations and the corresponding problem and i'll check my newly downloaded copy.

At 221-229, "...a romance between Aragorn and E (MISSING TEXT HERE) that Tolkien wrote...".

Wherever the word "Dunedain" should occur (with an acute accent on the "u"), what is actually shown is "Du" with a circumflex accent on the "u", and the next 19 characters are missing. For some examples, see these locations in the trilogy: 455-60 and 24701-2.

In the hard copy, from the chapter "Shadow of the Past"
"The Enemy still lacks one thing to give him strength and knowledge to beat down all resistance......"
In the Kindle version....
"The Enemy still lacks one thing to and knowledge to beat down all resistance...."

24701-2 i couldn't find Dunedain at all

The Trilogy on Kindle beats my hardcopy that's 1137 pages and hefty.

ok...i guess there's been a semi-major restructuring of the text with this new release. 24701 is just after the start of the section: Of Other Races, which begins with a description of the ents. i checked this text against my hardcopy and it looks ok. these "locations" are a bit of a pain, given that there's no way to pinpoint exactly where they start and stop (is there?).

update: i think i found the location you are referring to. at location 24670 it reads
...a secret folk, unfriendly to the Dunedain, hating the Rohirrim.
if that's the location, it looks fine to me.

Have I got this right, then, that the quality issues are only to be found in the Omnibus version? Ie, if I buy the individual books of LOTR, the quality is perfectly fine and I also get all the expected illustrations & maps (and those are of decent quality)?
