Waiting For Spring by R.J. Keller - $0.99 [Drama]

Quote:
A recently divorced woman trudges out of one small, Maine town and into an even smaller one, hoping to escape her pain. Instead she finds herself surrounded by people who are trudging on, just like her. Waiting for things to get better. Waiting for spring.

Waiting For Spring takes readers beyond the lighthouses and rocky beaches tourists visit and drops them instead into a rural Maine town that is filled with displaced factory workers who struggle with poverty and loss, yet push onward with stubbornness and humor.

Proceeds from this book will be donated to Spruce Run, a domestic abuse project providing information and support to all people affected by domestic abuse.
Vicious by Brandon Massey - $0.99 [Horror]

Quote:
The night is full of wild things...

When Kym Phillips embarks on a road trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles to take her younger sister to college, she's anticipating an opportunity to bond with her sister and a chance to see the country. And as an accomplished, single professional with her thirtieth birthday only a week away and no marriage prospects in sight, Kym is looking forward to some quiet time to reflect on the frustrating course of her love life.

Waiting for them...

He roams the lonely highways and barren canyons of the Southwest. Leader of a pack of vicious minions, he hunts the night for travelers far from home... for prey.

Deep into their journey, Kym realizes that someone is following them. Someone with an uncanny predator's instinct. Someone with a sick hunger for blood. Someone who, no matter what they do to escape, is utterly relentless...

Explosive, lightning-paced, and impossible to put down, this is Brandon Massey at his thrilling best.

PRAISE FOR BRANDON MASSEY'S THRILLERS:

"An intense thriller . . . a wild ride!"
-Kevin O'Brien, New York Times bestselling author

“A razor-sharp thriller guaranteed to keep you turning pages well into the night. Start this one on your day off—-you won't be able to put it down.”
—Douglas Clegg, bestselling author of The Queen of Wolves and The Hour Before Dark

"The talented Mr. Massey has the rare knack of grabbing the reader early and not letting go. Massey knows how to ratchet up the suspense."
—John Lutz, New York Times bestselling author

“A taut, involving, and utterly convincing thrill ride.”
—Gregg Olsen, New York Times bestselling author

I doubt that a bicycle would be enough to get them into the gang (or be worth much when fencing). Not to mention the uncertain outcome of dealing with crazy hobos!

New free read from Samhain this morning. These generally last one or two weeks and, as always, read the warning before deciding if you want to one-click.

Killing Joe, by Marie Treanor.

Book Description
How many times can one man die? To professional assassin Joe, life is cheap, and crash researcher Anna just another hit. Until his own unplanned car crash changes everything. Dr. Anna Baird, dedicated to the point of obsession, suddenly finds her state-of-the-art crash test dummy haunted by a weird and exciting stranger - who seems doomed to repeatedly experience the fate he'd intended for Anna.

Lost in a reality only he and Anna inhabit, Joe finds himself falling in love with his intended victim, and ultimately fighting to save her life - because whoever hired him still wants her dead.

Warning: This title contains explicit ..., occasional bad language and extreme violence perpetrated against crash test dummies.

$@#^$#@%!!! What's with all the violence against crash test dummies lately? I remember when crash test dummies were respected and could teach you a thing or two (about safety belts).

Tumor: Chapter 1, by Joshua Hale Fialkov and Noel Tuazon, is a dark Los Angeles noir from the Harvey Award nominated creators of the critically acclaimed Elk’S Run ($9.99; graphic novel, 224 pages, 11.3MB). I don't know what this looks like on the K2, but on my DX and in portrait mode, it's pretty great (not bad in landscape mode, either). You get two panels, side by side, in landscape mode, so it's a bit smaller in size. I wish it was the same one at a time as in portrait mode, so that the size could be blown up a bit, but it is easily readable either way and page turns are as fast as with text. I had to guess about the number of pages, as locations don't really work with graphic novels (there are only 10 in this one, for example), but I'd say it's between 80 and 100 panels in length (and 3.6 MB in size). Chapter Two is promised to arrive on July 27 and to be a Kindle exclusive. Normally, I'd be opposed to buying a book a chapter at a time, but with graphic novels that may be a necessity, simply due to the size. There isn't a lot of space on the original Kindle, for example, although I suspect these are better suited for the DX's screen size (maybe in the next update or two, they can work on resizing panels to take up as much screen size as possible, in landscape mode, rather than fitting two at a time on the screen).

Warning: The language used in quite adult and there is graphic violence (albeit, in black and white). Nothing that a typical adolescent boy isn't already reading (and in color), but it may not be suitable for the very young.

Book Description

Frank Armstrong has an inoperable brain tumor that’s killing him. In his final days, with his body, senses, and mind failing him, he’s going to do the one thing that he’s never been able to do before… save the girl.

I don't know how long it will last, but Chris Anderson's FREE: The Future of a Radical Price is free once again on Kindle, plus the offer to get Anderson's earlier book, The Long Tail, (Revised and Updated) for free is still valid as well. So, for zero cost you can get both books, with one order.

If you already purchased FREE earlier, then you'll need to call Kindle support and return that copy of the book and re-purchase it. I sat with my finger on the one-click button and grabbed it as soon as the representative said the first order had been returned. Both titles are now safely ensconced on my DX, waiting for me to find time to read them. If only these free titles came with more free time to read them....

King's Property, by Morgan Howell, is currently free to download on Kindle. This is the first of her Queen of the Orcs trilogy and has a number of good reviews. The entire trilogy is available on Kindle.

Book Description
Born into hardship, Dar learns to rely on herself alone. When her family betrays her, Dar is conscripted into King Kregant’s army and its brutal campaign to conquer a neighboring country. Now she is bound as a slave to a dreaded regiment of orcs, creatures legendary for their savagery and battle prowess.
Rather than cower, Dar rises to the challenge. She learns the unique culture and language of the orcs, survives treachery from both allies and enemies, and struggles to understand a mystical gift that brings her dark, prophetic visions. As the war escalates–amid nightmarish combat and shattering loss–Dar must seize a single chance at freedom.
