The non-illuminated screens are a little sharper in bright light (eg sunlight), I agree. As soon as you're reading in poorer artificial light, though, the extra illumination provided by the frontlight more than makes up for any loss of clarity due to the light diffuser, to my mind, and those are the conditions in which I do the overwhelming majority of my reading.

The move from the Touch to the KPW1, which brought both a light layer but also 212 dpi vs 167 dpi, made no noticable difference in sharpness to me, but the light layer boosted the Kindle's clarity to such an extent that I could now use it in places where the Touch was unusable, but a *paper* book could (just) be read. |

I find the comments on the light layer interesting. My posts are still there in the threads when the PW1 first came out. Or a bit after when some of us posted about how it was like looking through a window. For me it was kind of like looking through milk, like the letters where underneath something. I always had a hard time describing this. I think Blossom had some similar terms at the time. Over time I got so frustrated I purchased the basic. The one with the buttons. So I had my great screen back and my buttons.
Only issue with that was that my eyes are not great and especially in normal and darker situations, even with side lamps and all that, my eyes started to tire out. So during day time, near a window and outside, it was all great. I just don't really read outside a lot. Its just way to hot around here most of the year. When the Voyage was announced, I waffled for a while. Since I went through like 3 different PW1 in 2012, I wanted to read reviews first. When I got the Voyage it was like nirvana for me. The screen was exactly what I was hoping for the PW1 at the time. I never saw a PW2 or PW3. The words are back on the top, there is no milk or window effect to look through at all. Its crisp and just like paper again. Just like my basic and the K3 in a way. You know how the words just sit on top like in printed pages. Bad at describing again. So I am so very happy at how the Voyage screen is. Like I said, I never have seen the latest or the middle version of the Paperwhite so I can't compare, but the Voyage is for me this magic again. The magic I felt when I opened and turned on my first kindle. The K1 with its magical shiny bar and the wheel. ![]() It was that kind of feeling for me again with the Voyage. I still would prefer actual buttons like on the K3 on my e-reader, but I take what I can get with the haptic. So they better not take the buttons off or not make a device like the Voyage. Or I am right back to where I was in 2012. or even 2007m with my eyes getting worse and at this time, there isn't even a device with buttons anymore. Mine still work as of now, but I want to be able to read for many years to come. So many books I still have to read. |

I might like the Voyage, but for me it is priced too high. I use both a Kandle and an iKross reading light and they do a good job in dark conditions.

I still think it's true; if there is not enough ambient light, the Kindle, and probably all front-lit e-readers, look like they are filled with milk with letters floating in between two sheets of glass. |

My Kindle Voyage is sharp and clear, and the words seem to pop off of the screen. I, too, am very happy. Last edited by Dr. Drib; 10-11-2015 at 07:20 AM. |

I'm really liking the Kindle that launched last month.
