Packt Publishing, a publisher of technical computer/Internet books, has a 24-day Christmas ebook daily giveaway going on right now. This is day 20, with the promotion running, then, for four more days. Today's freebie is Python Testing: A Beginner's Guide. The retail price is $23.99.
Follow this link to get the book, and check it each day to see what's free for those days: https://www.packtpub.com/packt/offer...tmas-countdown. To get the book free, you will need to have an "account" with Packt, but I think that all that is required to set it up is to provide an email address and password. (I don't know when each "day" begins and ends, in Packt's way of reckoning (I do wish that all of these companies offering deals on one or more particular days would tell us what time zone that they consider the day(s) to fall within!). Packt's home office is in Birmingham, UK., I don't know if the promotion goes by the time there or not. One thing tells me that it might: I'm on the east coast of the U.S. and it is December 19 now. Packt is calling this "day 20" of the promotion. At the time of day that it is now (10:13 p.m. Eastern), the U.K. is already on December 20.) As far as I'm concerned, I won't get the book, even though it's free. No siree. I don't plan on testing any pythons. And I don't plan on testing any anacondas, or any other snakes either, for that matter. If you choose to do so, that is your business, but please do be careful--we don't want to lose your presence on the Mobileread site! (ha!) |

HarperCollinsPublisher has a handful of their biographies on sale. The ebooks are $2.99.
These ebooks are apparently available at the sale prices only directly through them. I checked Amazon on one of the books and it was not on sale there. I can't vouch for the quality of the ebooks, but looking over the selection I can say that there is a good variety of categories--musicians, sports figures, political figures, criminals, and others. Go here to see the entire selection, and to place your order if you see something that you want. You must use promo code BIO299 to get the discounted price (that information is also near the top of the page, but it might be easy to miss it). Even if you don't see something that you want, you might want to click on any link to a book, anyway. On the page that comes up, near the top of the page on the right, there is a sort of aqua blue box which contains a link to a selection of other ebooks, these priced under $2. I explored this list only enough to note that there is a large selection of these. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-22-2014 at 12:28 AM. |

Imperial Sunset: The Fall of Napoleon, 1813-14 by R F Delderfield
This vivid history of the political and military decline of Napoleon Bonaparte recounts the unraveling of his grip on Europe, beginning with the Russian incursion into France in 1813 and ending with Napoleon's first exile, to Elba, in 1814. From his vivid picture of the Cossacks on the Elbe in the Spring of 1813, through the tortuous crumbling of the empire, to Napoleon's exile to Elba, in 1814, R. F. Delderfield paints a majestic canvas that encompasses within its sweep the Emperor, his family, his warlords and retainers, while never losing sight of the footsore and weary ragged common soldiers on their way home to put up one last heroic fight in the face of doom. Ronald Frederick Delderfield (12 February 1912 - 24 June 1972) was an English novelist and dramatist, some of whose works have been adapted for television. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ODWHP72/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ODWHP72/ http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00ODWHP72/ http://www.amazon.jp/gp/product/B00ODWHP72/ THE BATTLE OF JERUSALEM - a Short History of the Six-Day War: June 1967 by Clifford Irving A short and spellbinding book about the Six-Day War of June 1967, in which Israel fought for its life for the third time in its brief history - and won a decisive victory against overwhelming odds. The author was there as a correspondent for NBC-TV, became a friend of Israeli soldiers and pilots, witnessed part of the battle for the Golan Heights, and traveled post-war to the Suez Canal in a command car with Irwin Shaw, Jules Dassin, and Martha Gellhorn. Illustrated with rare and moving photographs of the battles, plus clear maps. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JFZWOH8/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00JFZWOH8/ http://www.amazon.cak/gp/product/B00JFZWOH8/ For the more colourful details about the author http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifford_Irving |

Great Deal on a Highly-Rated Book on the Battle of Dunkirk (World War II)
Dunkirk: Retreat to Victory. By Julian Thompson. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 11 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $24.95; digital list price $16.99; Kindle $1.99. 352 pages. Arcade Publishing, publisher. http://www.amazon.com/Dunkirk-Retrea...eat+to+Victory.
Book Description A gripping account, Dunkirk reveals the British Expeditionary Force’s (BEF) brave stand against the German army and the dramatic rescue of 338,000 British troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in the midst of World War II. In May 1940, the small BEF was sent to help the Belgians and French against advancing German forces. Ill-equipped and under-trained, the Allied troops conducted a fighting withdrawal in the face of the formidable Germans. Winston Churchill feared that nearly all of the BEF would be killed or captured, but thankfully most were rescued and a defeat was turned into a victory—one that lives on in the annals of history. General Julian Thompson draws from previously unpublished and rare materials to recreate the action on the beaches of the small town—from the misunderstandings between the British and French generals to the experiences of the ordinary soldier trying to fend for his life and return to his homeland. Unlike other books on the subject, Thompson’s account gives full weight to the fighting inland as the BEF found itself in mortal danger due to the Belgian army’s collapse on one flank and the French troop’s failure on the other flank. Thompson aims to correct popular myths about the evacuation and set the history straight once and for all about the events that unfolded in May 1940. |

Summertime Publications, a "small independent press," has placed about 4 or 5 of their ebooks on sale for just 99 cents each. It looks like the retail print price of these books ranges from $9.99 to $14.99.
Summertime is calling this their "French Collection Promo." The selection on sale now is made up of books that have something to do with France. Some of the ebooks appear to be only available at Amazon. However, some of them are available for the iPad and Nook readers. The sale runs to December 28. But, if you're interested in titles about France, what's keeping you from going to the website and checking into them now? Go do it. Here's the link: http://www.summertimepublications.com/. I'm so excited about this promotion that I almost want to burst out speaking some French again. But, I'll restrain myself. ha |

Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II
by Keith Lowe is $1.99 at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Savage-Contine...vage+continent Below is the blurb: The Second World War might have officially ended in May 1945, but in reality it rumbled on for another ten years... The end of the Second World War in Europe is one of the twentieth century’s most iconic moments. It is fondly remembered as a time when cheering crowds filled the streets, danced, drank and made love until the small hours. These images of victory and celebration are so strong in our minds that the period of anarchy and civil war that followed has been forgotten. Across Europe, landscapes had been ravaged, entire cities razed and more than thirty million people had been killed in the war. The institutions that we now take for granted - such as the police, the media, transport, local and national government - were either entirely absent or hopelessly compromised. Crime rates were soaring, economies collapsing, and the European population was hovering on the brink of starvation. In Savage Continent, Keith Lowe describes a continent still racked by violence, where large sections of the population had yet to accept that the war was over. Individuals, communities and sometimes whole nations sought vengeance for the wrongs that had been done to them during the war. Germans and collaborators everywhere were rounded up, tormented and summarily executed. Concentration camps were reopened and filled with new victims who were tortured and starved. Violent anti-Semitism was reborn, sparking murders and new pogroms across Europe. Massacres were an integral part of the chaos and in some places – particularly Greece, Yugoslavia and Poland, as well as parts of Italy and France – they led to brutal civil wars. In some of the greatest acts of ethnic cleansing the world has ever seen, tens of millions were expelled from their ancestral homelands, often with the implicit blessing of the Allied authorities. Savage Continent is the story of post WWII Europe, in all its ugly detail, from the end of the war right up until the establishment of an uneasy stability across Europe towards the end of the 1940s. Based principally on primary sources from a dozen countries, Savage Continent is a frightening and thrilling chronicle of a world gone mad, the standard history of post WWII Europe for years to come. |

I listened to the narration. It's better than serviceable. The narrator is a male. He does have a British accent--fitting, I'd say, since Stanley was Welsh and Livingstone was Scottish. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-29-2014 at 12:08 AM. |

New HarperCollinsPublishers Ebook Sale--Prices Matched by Amazon
I come across advertisements here-and-there, and from time-to-time, for HarperCollinsPublishers' sales on ebooks. Here is information about the most recent ad, that I saw today.
There are 122 books in total, if I counted right. The selection includes both non-fiction and fiction, and cuts across many genres. There are some really good titles among them. All books are $2.99 and under! This represents a huge discount on most of these books. I did a spot-check of 7 or 8 books, and the price points that I found were $1.99 and $2.99. HCP directs you to buy the ebooks directly from them. However, it looks like if you don't have a(n) 1) iPhone/iPad, 2) Android, or 3) Kindle Fire, you are out of luck--HCP has only products for them. On top of that, you have to use their proprietary reader. In the aforementioned spot-check that I did, however, I found that Amazon has the same prices on them. And, of course, the books are Kindle/mobis, so you can use any one of various readers for Kindle. I didn't find an expiration date anywhere, so as they say around here, "you snooze, you lose." Here's the link: http://www.harpercollins.com/billboarddealslide3. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-29-2014 at 12:49 AM. |
