Maybe so, but Still it is what we want as a user. And should that not carry a huge bearing on the direction of the future of the firmware. Or are we to move ahead like cattle to the slaughter house?

While I am generally in favour of more user choice, I think asking a company to allow users to choose between two different home screens on a low-powered, low-cost dedicated e-reader may be asking too much.

Yes it is not as if this is offered on low cost android tablet or netbooks. They all give you randomly moving little square boxes with no control. Still it is interesting in a bizarre way. This AM my sync box was gone with no effort on my part and my library Icon and current book boxes swapped places

Bug in 2.8.1 on Kobo Touch

Hi,

I believe I have found a bug in the 2.8.1 firmware when used on a Kobo Touch N905C.

After installing the 2.8.1 firmware everything appears to be fine EXCEPT the "News and Magazines" entry appears to be missing when I tap "Library".

I only see "Books | Previews | Shelves".
I am pretty sure with 2.6.1 there was a "News and Magazines" in between the first and second menu options.

That's all, for now.

This bug has been getting on my nerves for a long time now. In the book I was recently reading, several chapters started with a blank page (just the chapter number at the top) because the paragraph was too long for the page. It was also common to have half-pages of text, giving the impression that the chapter was about to end, only for it to continue on the next page.

One of the more annoying aspects of the bug is that I have no idea why anyone would need a paragraph to start on a new page if it won't fit on the current one. To the best of my knowledge this is not replicated in print books (I have never had a print book start a chapter with a blank page). And I have never forgotten what I have just read in the half-second it takes to turn the page.

Do you have any subscriptions to newspapers or magazines? It seems that if you don't have any then this is omitted from the menu (based on reports so far).

Does it have to be official subscriptions done through "Kobo"? I don't have any.

I only have a newspaper feed set up through Calibre at the moment.
I guess that one would show up in the "Books" menu alongside all my other Calibre books?

Yes, official Kobo subscriptions. Your sideloaded Calibre newspapers likely used to show up in the "books" section rather than the "news and magazines" section before this anyway correct? I know there have been questions from people before trying to find a way to put sideloaded newspaper in the newspaper section.

I think this is likely correct. One thing I would like, though, is the ability to "pin" tiles on the homescreen, as well as permanently dismiss all of them (the extra plugin is great!). I'd like to set up my screen with current book, next couple in line, and my top shelves, in the three columns, without them shifting around all the time.

I do like that the tiles recently shuffled off the screen come back when new tiles (eg newly added books) are dismissed. That's a nice touch.

Greetings,

First post - though been reading this forum a lot. I'm new to the ebook realm, having just had my Kobo Glo for about two months.

I did a factory reset today and was updated to 2.8.1. Overall, I think I like it.

It would appear the text in the current book I'm reading is marginally smaller, and stepping up to the next size makes it too big.

Also, I notice there is no label to say how many books in the library (not that I've seen).

The firmware could sure use some tweaks to add some functionality. There are lots of things I'd like to see. I'll have to make a list sometime.

Overall, I'm really stoked with my reader - enough that I brought the wife one

So far, quite pleased with update and impressed that Kobo are still working away to improve our reading experience.
Would still love to get rid of that bloody box on full screen sleeping mode though or at the very least make it look more aesthetically pleasing!

Welcome and glad that you are happy with your ereader.

The list of sizes has some holes in it. If you are a calibre user, you can set fonts to other sizes using my Kobu Utilities plugin.

Hmm, I hadn't really noticed that. The reading stats page shows number finished and percentages, but no count. The only thing I can think of is the library list has "Page x of y" at the top. y is the number of pages and their are five books per page.

And just in case you haven't found out, most places that use italics in the interface can be pressed to do something. Press the "of" and entry field will be shown to type in a page number.

We all have one of those lists Just look at how long the firmware recommendations thread is.

I bought a Touch and my wife stole it. But I stole back it after a few days (she shouldn't have left it lying around) then bought her one the next week. Luckily she hasn't really looked at the Glo, or even worse, seen an Aura HD.

Not sure if sarcastic or not, but it's trivially easy to change the launcher (home screen) on Android. You can make it look like an iPhone, Windows Phone, or even some weird swirly 3D thing that doesn't make sense but looks impressive when you show it off down the pub.
