And how many non-techies actually know that the Transformer exists? It might be one of the favorites in the techie or early adopter circle but it certainly hasn't reached mass market consciousness. The Kindle Fire and Nook Color/Tablet yes. However, while both are running Android under the hood, it's safe to say they're marketed differently compared to most Android tablets.

The Fire and Nook are perhaps not as significant as you may believe in a world-wide context. Don't forget that they are only sold in the US.

My 72 y.o. mom definitely falls into that category, which is why we got her an iPad 2 last year, and she loves it. Best part is that once I got her wireless router and wireless printer set up, there have been almost no technical support phone calls from Mom.

aGPS uses a GPS chip and cellular or wifi data. It is better than a "standalone" GPS because the additional data helps with startup time and in conditions where reception from the satellites may degrade (trees, cities, valleys).

My grandmother, too (I think she's turning 86 soon). She's never used a computer before so I think a tablet would be easier for her to learn and would make it easy for us to share photos or video conference with her. The iPad's too expensive, though, so I haven't bought one for her yet (the money was better spent helping her with utilities and medical bills). Now that I'm upgrading to the iPad 3 though, seriously considering sending her my iPad 2 instead of selling it.

So you would count some shitty $99 android talet at cvs. C'mon. Even I wouldn't count that in there if I needed to inflate my numbers. Far and away device to device iPad has outsold any tablet on the market. even so ar the kindle fire, which has probably sold the most of any other android tablet.

Same here. Bought my mom the iPad 2 last year & I've never had to provide tech support.

That's because iOS only has one tablet. Not so Android.

One thing that I think will be a big deal is the Hidef display. It'll push android tablets to follow suit, and produce a ripple effect among content producers. If you are putting out digital version of your magazine / comic / book / website, those 1024x768 images aren't going to cut it any more. We may begin to see adoption of scalable graphics. And games will need a huge bump.

The book I recently completed has over 200 pictures and I made sure they were all at least double current iPad resolution anticipating the new iPad released last week. Looks like I made a good call. I'm anxious to see it on the new display.

Android tablets in the 10" class already had higher resolution before the iPad's retina display. Most are technically high def since the definition for high def is just 720p (1280x720) or higher.

As for digital magazines, comics, etc, a lot of those already have higher resolution. That's why zooming in on comics work. The pixels are already there. If they weren't, then this isn't exactly NCIS where you can magically generate details that aren't in the original. If the originals were only 1024x768, you'll just get a blurry blown-up image or some big squares (depending on the resampling algorithm) when you zoom in.

The Transformer Prime launch was miserable. The GPS did not work correctly, wifi range was weak, keyboard shipments were delayed, and they didn't have the latest Android OS at launch. They won't really fix the first two issues until the NEXT Transformer, which they announced about a month after the Prime launch. They have to redesign the metal rear case to either use engineered grills or plastic windows. But after the announcement of the next model in the pipeline, how many people are jumping on the Prime?

That is no way to compete.

And what most geeks misunderstand is, the general public doesn't buy tablets based on specifications. They are mostly buying the store experience (B&N, Apple, or Amazon)and "ecosystem." Android Marketplace? The general public hears Charlie Brown's parents speaking that name, "wah, wah, wah." It has zero cachet. Another marketing failure (of the same magnitude as Windows phone but that is whole other can of marketing pain).

It just doesn't matter if a Transformer can lift three iPads. At that price point there is no tablet market. There is an iPad market. The Fire and Nook tablets are hot (in America) because of price.
