You can refresh only part of an eInk screen, that is what the devices that implement partial refreshes do!

people keep throwing around that "lose $50 on each one sold" bit from that article quoting Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster that ran at Fortune. Some of the tech blogs/sites are quoting it likes its a known fact.
Its not The BOM for the 16GB Playbook is about $190 before losing the Cameras, Bluetooth, GPS, Gyroscope, SD slot. Removing those could make the BOM of the Fire about $160. Oh there is the firmware development, advertising, packaging costs and import shipping costs. but i have no reason to believe they would add another $90 to the cost per device http://www.ubmtechinsights.com/teard...book-teardown/ oh and eetimes posted an article saying the Fire BOM is probably $150 http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-n...mated--150-BoM quoting UBMtechinsights Last edited by Dulin's Books; 09-29-2011 at 06:39 PM. |

partial and localized refreshes have been possible since the dawn of vizplex 3-4 years ago.

![]() If I recall correctly, the original Kindle didn't become available in Canada until Kindle 2 came out. But I could be wrong. We'll probably get it eventually. Last edited by tea2; 09-29-2011 at 06:55 PM. |

They don't know what sort of deals RIM or Amazon were able to do with suppliers. Plus the mere fact of time moving on and newer products coming out has probably reduced the prices of some of the components. |

Do the K4 and the KTouch both have a plug for a headset? There are times when I have the my K3 read to me... and I would sorely miss this feature!

If RIM decided to build less total playbooks I imagine Amazon got a deal on parts in the pipeline. |

After they added library loans (at least in the US), Amazon has no reason to ever consider EPUB again. Not that I agree with them of course, but it's not in THEIR best interest anymore than it is for Apple to support WMA or Vorbis audio files.
They will never support EPUB, imo - loaners finally killed any possibility that it would ever happen. Btw, talked to my mom and she was telling me that the NYT was saying that Amazon is gunning for Apple. I don't agree - they aren't gunning for Apple at the moment, they are gunning for B&N. If B&N doesn't drop their prices by Black Friday, they are going to get buried. Last edited by roebeet; 09-29-2011 at 07:59 PM. |

all of the papers and websites are blinded by the ipad. they have all written something like "amazon blazes after ipad" or some other idiocy without mentioning the obvious b&n competitor. meanwhile for months the have talked about how the nook color was the king of android tablets

I prefer Amazon over iTunes. I've never purchased anything through iTunes and don't plan to. Being tied to the Amazon ecosystem isn't a negative for many. I'm loyal to Amazon for everything, and I'm sure many feel like me. That's why they're a major player. I bought a Sony Tablet, so I certainly could have bought an iPad instead, just not interested in anything iPad. Many feel the same way.
I own a 3 year-old MacBook Pro and will be replacing it with a new Mac eventually. I have nothing against Apple. Just wish people would stop acting like the iPad is something to be coveted by everyone. It's not. Last edited by SCION; 09-29-2011 at 08:13 PM. |

Glue it to a cut piece of plywood, or cardboard, or go first class and use a pretty stained and lacquered hardwood.

It really doesn't matter. They just take the earlier version of Android which is like the undercarriage of a truck or car and then they add a motor, the controls, everything that you see.
