The DXG pdf file on page 6 address your situation...

Pause a moment to upgrade progress bar will appear, if the update was successful the following screen appears:

Hi there

I have installed Duokan on my Kindle DXG and I really like it. The only thing I don't find is how to turn to landscape, if I turn Kindle landscape nothing happens (picture does not turn). Any idea?

Landscape mode works when you are viewing a pdf in Normal mode. The Aa key gives you a menu for pdf that is different from that of other books. you just click on Direction, and you get a 4=way selector.

Landscape mode will not work with Smart Layout in pdf.

I don't have a Kindle yet but I really want one and have some questions about Duokan.

1: Does this firmware degrade the contrast of the screen or the speed at which the pages turn?
2: How well does it render ePub files? Is it pretty much spot on, rendering them as they would appear on a Sony or a Nook?
3: Does it have ePub DRM support, so could I check out books from the library and load then on Duokan?

1. On my Kindle 2, Doukan contrast looks the same. It may be slightly slower, but I haven't really noticed.
2. Epub looks fine. I can't compare it with Sony or Nook, but it looks just fine to me.
3. DRMed ePubs, library or otherwise, are not going to work on Duokan, because you won't be able to register the device, I believe. You will have to remove the DRM, then they work fine.

Duokan is amazing for djvu and pdf files. However, it is quite lousy when it renders mobi and epub files. The spacing is all over the place, there are abrupt linebreaks and it inserts a huge space after any apostrophe. I read somewhere that it is because of some chinese font issues. However, the rendering is equally bad when I add freefont fonts lifted from a linux system. I guess, it's just a matter of time...

One thing which would totally be awesome would be to have the cover of your current book as the screensaver... a feature oft-requested by the kindle community. Hope there are some duokan developers listening in!!

Maybe I don't understand the problem ? It seem like they do some font fiddling, and you may set your own fonts. ( many, many packages exist..) Does the original Amazon system show correct fonts ? Equal fonts seem available. Also utf8,utf16, equal packages of some Microsoft font-sets packages, etc.

I have little knowledge of fonts, and I suppose NiLuJe would be the one to ask, but as far as I understand, some fonts use too much cpu resources for rendering. Duokan have placed some weight on their quick "brush update of page" - ( imagine that Chinese fonts might be even more demanding on cpu resources then European )

Anyway, I have come across some packages, but don't have little idea of their contents, quality, etc. -as I have not had time for it.

Notice: yes, there are some trouble, and as some have here have hinted at before, thinking it is the system, then there is some trouble because of "multi-view", which attempt to handle the different font sets and bit-size.

More font issues:

ok, I cannot find the post, but some complained that they did not see any letters. I simply did not grasp what they were talking about. But now, I came across something:

It may matter what sort of computer you are using. The problem seem to happen when upgrading, where Apple computers first does a delete before copy during an "overwrite" operation. It seem like you may have to save the font-directory, and copy it back after a version update. Apple and Microsoft does not write to the USB media in exactly the same way. Perhaps this may make some sense ?

Fethry, some letters do not show up, e.g. german umlauts (öä, ü is way too big), but some other letters too.

This happens with all fonts and even self installed fonts.

Kindle itself and also FBKindle handels these letters correct. If only FBKindle would support to add annotations I would not see any use of Duokan anymore...

For me so far Duokan is not usable because of this issue.

OH, MAN - SHOOT

- I lost a lot of my project work. How ? Duokan started update to 1211 while I had a bunch of work tied to an older release !! - sad for me, but it was in fact kind of impressive to see it upgrading the system.

-this is somewhat hard to believe. You did mention the space behind some letter, which I do believe is due to utf-16. ( why the space - they may just have patched the fontfile, as these letters have little interest for their main concern at the moment ) Do you have a sample page you could attach ?
