I do have a pair of noise canceling headphones, but I don't use them for this. His music is loud enough for me to hear on an otherwise quiet day, but not blasting out. My Koss PortaPros do just fine.

Well, honestly, they're less about the noise cancelling than the actual headphone quality. Which is very, very good. That they're also good at noise cancelling was a requirement, but what I was looking for were really good headphones that I could wear to listen to music while having to work in a noisy "pod" environment. Basic NC would have been sufficient, but I was pleasantly surprised at just how far NC has come in the 30 years since I bought a pair of early Bose headphones. Which had neither the sound quality, nor the NC quality that these do, and cost about as much in current dollars. (Though these are actually cheaper here in Canada than they are in the US. ) And yes, they were very much a splurge.

(BTW, if you want crazy expensive, look no further than the absolutely superlative Shure SL-846 earbuds.) I lust after them, but it's simply not ever going to be in the cards.)

Okay, good. Despite his unfortunate taste in music (I'm just rarely in the mood for house, dance, or Broadway Musical) he's a nice guy.


My noise canceling headphones are by Able Planet and set me back $50 at Costco several years ago. They are better than you'd expect for $50, but I'd be disappointed if I'd spent $400 on them.

And (speaking of nice guys with questionable taste in music), my wife asked me to buy her a pair.

I take your $900 Shure SE846 and raise you a $59,000 pair of Sennheiser HE1 headphones.

Admittedly, as is the nature of electrostatic headphones, that $59k includes a special headphone amp thingy (technically an "energizer"), but still...

EDIT: Insert rant about products being shipped in comically unneccessarily huge boxes, I got 3 pairs of Koss KPH30i headphones (Amazon says the box is 8.35" x 6.69" x 2.44") delivered in a box that was 16" x 12" x 11" according to FedEx.

Yes. This latest generation do an excellent job. Do they eliminate 100% of noise? Obviously not, but the better NC headphones are about as effective as good foam earplugs in my real world experience. With the added benefit of being able to play music with good fidelity.

Thank’s CRussel. I’ll have to search for some. I always listen to an audiobook when doing my walks, and there are some places where it’s a bit noisy so I have to adjust the volume, also in windy days it is a pain, because I have to push the volume up quite a bit.
