Beside that, I have enough fantasy, horror, detectives, and historical fiction to last me for at least 15 years, possibly 20. All my series are complete, as I only ever buy entire series at once, after they are officially 'done.' (Therefore, I don't have the Song of Ice and Fire books, for example, and I didn't watch the TV series yet, as strange as it may seem.)

In short, I've decided to actively quit buying ebooks, except for the ones I'm going to read right now.

Because of this, I've stopped worrying about keeping up with new series, as I have enough stuff to read to last me at least my entire lifetime.

The same goes for music and movies, by the way. I have hundreds of movies on DVD and Blu-Ray, and over 800 CD's ripped to FLAC (with over 400 classical CD's yet to go). I'll buy new stuff at the time I'm going to watch it or listen to it, and not before.

*Rest assured, these classics actually are legal, free, and still up for download, one at a time. The loophole has been closed years ago though.

That same Draconian measure has restored sanity to my book buying since I also realize that a book purchased, but not read right away, is quite likely to never be read. Or to go on sale again for less in a year or two.

But I love my huge library of book choices. I don't regret all the enjoyment in building that library. It just turned out to be difficult to put the brakes on. Now that I have succeeded in refraining from habitual purchasing, it feels good to be in control. I've purchased - and read - five books so far this year.

Freebies don't count as purchases. I've picked up a few Open Road classics, but I've avoided the old morning ritual of looking for them. I don't regret that, either. It was great fun. But everything has a season.

Stay strong. It will be hard. I told myself 4 years ago that I do not need another cookbook EVER (and I don't, truly). I get ebook freebees to satisfy my lust and I've been able to keep it to only 1-2 a year while cutting my cookbook collection in half. You just have to find a strategy and if going cold turkey works for you, great. Doesn't last too long for me, and then I binge. Kindof like going on a diet.

No, it won't be hard. I actually can't remember when I bought my last book.

After buying half the Forgotten Realms library (last year, and the end of 2013, during the huge Kobo unlimited use coupouns), I started thinking: Why should I buy even more media (movies, books, music) in advance? I might never get around to using it.

The point is: I like having a huge library, but I have noticed that there is no excitement in browsing your own library. Let's say, you could get together with 100 people, and everybody would contribute 100 books. You'd instantly have a 10.000 book library, which will be great to browse, because of one reason: you don't know what's in there.

I have a library of around 800 books now, but because I've fixed the metadata (and layout, where necessary) of each and every one, there is no point in browsing this library. I exactly know what is in it already. Mention a book, and I can instantly tell you if I have it or not.

I think "habitual" is the key word. For me, it turned out to be a habit readily broken after a couple of rocky days. Before, the bargain created the want much of the time; now I have a short list of wants but feel no pressure to do anything about them. When I'm ready to read one, I'll buy it at the best price going at the time. I think if there were another unlimited big coupon (and I'd be stunned if there were) I'd just pick up a few old favorites and maybe not even that.

I guess there's browsing and browsing. I won't find something undreamt of in my library, but I still like browsing it to see which book jumps up and says, "Me! Me! Pick me!" when I'm looking for my next read. It's the same way I choose a perfume in the morning.

And that said, I've got my books organized by appeal and only put the top level on my readers. But the second tier is really just as good as the top tier and I can be surprised when I take a look, since they're not usually under consideration.

For some reason, I rarely experience that situation. I know which book I'm going to read days before I finish my current one, and the weird thing is that, at that point, I don't actually want to finish it.

Strange enough, I hate finishing books, for some reason. I like starting a new one, getting into the story and getting to know the but then, at around 70% or so, I have often guessed the rest of the story, the arc, and often the ending as well. Because I'm more often correct than not, at that point, my reading gets slower and slower... and slower... which causes me to need as three times as long for the last 30% as I needed for the first 70%.

Also, very strange, if a character that I like *a lot* dies during the book, I instantly get the urge to not finish it. At that point, the book often lies unread for a week or more, until the urge to have nothing unfinished in my life takes over and I finish it.

Same here; I don't use perfume.

As for books, I've got several lists of varying priority. Just on my Glo, I've got a "read now" list (25-30 books), a "read soon" list (around 430 books), and then Everything Else... which consists of books I've already read plus later-in-series books. For instance, there's a six-book series where the first book is "soon" and the other five are "else." Then there are my physical stacks, where I've got a list of a dozen that I want to get to Sometime This Year (for a challenge) and the rest are pretty much "else."

Then there are the ebooks I haven't parsed yet - bought and downloaded, but I haven't cleaned up the metadata and/or CSS, so they haven't graduated to the reader/library yet. There are enough of those that I've sorted them into five loose piles: Already Read (physical books I've rebought as ebooks), First, Later, On Hold, and a handful of So New They Haven't Been Sorted Yet. There are a few subdivisions in there, like bundles that default to Later and a few books that need autograph pages added, but those categories are (more than) enough. I really need to plow through some of those piles...

So when I finish a book, I've got plenty of options on tap. It just comes down to what I feel like reading (or, for some physical books, unearthing) at the time. It's a lot like that "pick me!" process.

I have £10.33 to spend at Amazon UK before the end of the month (it expires after the 31st).

Luckily, that will still only bring my total for the year to just over £74, still under my budget of £75.

The question is: what to buy? I suspect it may turn out to be some Baen books, even though they're better value at Kobo with a coupon because, after all, I must spend the money at Amazon or lose it.

Perhaps I'll just keep a lose eye on the SF&Fantasy bargains thread for the rest of the month.

So I, too, resisted a book for only 99¢. In an area of particular interest to me and it would have been effectively free, since I have slow shipping credit. But I wouldn't have got to it at any time in the conceivable future, so I moved on.

In fact, I've only bought one Kindle deal so far this year (The Glory of Their Times) and it was with credit and I'm reading it now.

This title is back to 99 cents. The publisher is relentless. However, the temptation just isn't there any longer.

Sigh. I was doing really well this year. And just blew it in the space of about 10 minutes! OK, they are books I want to read. And yes, one of them I will read almost immediately (as soon as I finish this Georgette Heyer) since it's related to our Book Club read for this month. But really, three new books? Bad.

Ok, where's that step. Need to climb back up on this wagon and it's gotten higher since the last time...
