Yup, that's it, all right; I just tested your theory. I installed the Kobo app on another smart phone, and using the new version, downloaded one of my audiobooks. I got files with the extension enc2 that I can't play outside the Kobo app.

I did find this site with downloads of earlier versions. I used this version when I downloaded the unencrypted mp3 files.

I have no idea why the app didn't automatically update--I don't know where the setting is to keep it from doing so. But it's on a phone on which wifi is turned off unless I'm actually downloading something.

Assuming you installed originally from the Google Play app, then you can turn off automatic updates for just the Kobo app in Google Play.

Thanks. I just turned off automatic updates for everything. I didn't see where I could turn off only Kobo, but it's just as well to stop all the automatic updates.

I guess I was just lucky that the last few Kobo updates didn't happen on my phone. I'm still disinclined to buy an audiobook from Kobo, unless something's got a fantastic sale price.

Yup, the older version downloaded my latest purchased book as regular mp3s without the extension. Yay!

BTW, to prevent auto-update of specific apps, go to the app's page in the Play Store app (the page where you see the "uninstall" and "open" or "update" buttons followed by all the app info and reviews) and click the three dots in the very upper right corner. There's the auto-update check box for that app.

I wonder what genius at Kobo decided to make this change to screw up the downloads; it's downright idiotic.

First, let me emphasize--I've known this to happen regarding legitimate websites before, though not necessarily from this product.

Malwarebytes Premium flagged the site having earlier versions of software, that you mentioned, saying "website blocked due to fraud." And, just as it said, it blocked the website--I couldn't go to it.

Indeed, just about every web site that is an unofficial source of .apk files will likely be flagged, and that's probably a good thing. No doubt some of the available content and ads IS indeed malware of one kind or another.

However, I see no indication that this particular file is a problem, so pm me if want an easier-to-access copy. But do so at your own risk....I don't see a problem, and I'm using it, but I make no guarantees that opening that app won't ruin your device, your finances or your life.

Actually, I went to the site more out of curiosity, and to bookmark the site should I want an earlier version of a piece of software in the future.

I know that some software like that is overly zealous, but I'd rather have the inconvenience associated with false positives occasionally than have a piece of software or a malicious website slip through that should have been caught.
