I just finished reading "The Host" by Stephanie Meyer and really liked it. The story was a good mixture of sci-fi, thriller, and romance. I stayed up late reading it because I couldn't resist the impulse to keep turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next with Wanda/Mel.

Next up is "Shades of Grey" by Jasper Fforde. So far, it's weird but funny.

I've read a number of short stories over the last few days, but am really beginning to get into The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. So I'll probably be focused on that for a bit.

Finally finished Tomorrow on the train this morning, yay! I can't tell you how relieved I was when I found out that the last 5 pages were in fact not part of the book, "about the author" kind of stuff.

I wouldn't describe it as a bad book, exactly. After all, the writing style (and grammar ) is much better than many books I've read recently. But it's not great, not enough to compensate for the silliness of the story. It's a very ordinary story of ordinary people, and that would be perfectly OK with me if the writing was extra-ordinary, but it isn't.

I've been buying or downloading way too many books lately, now I need to decide which one I want to start on. And of course, finish Louis XIV and keep on reading Proust (that one's going to be ongoing for a while anyway).

Finished the first four discworlds and, while I wouldn't say I was a convert I enjoyed them and would read more for light entertainment.

I am now reading The Business by Iain Banks and I can definitely say I am a convert there. I'm only about 1/3 in but it is shaping up to be one of my top books for this year (assuming I finish it by midnight which isn't likely)...

Having heard so much praise on MR for Stieg Larsson's 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', I picked up a pcopy in the local bookshop.
Even the member of staff at the till picked it out from my little pile to tell me how good it was.
200 pages in and I can see what all the fuss is about - I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

I just picked up two "Girl...." books, hoping to get to them soon to see what the fuss is about.

Glad you got to Pillars, that's a great book. Never has an author inspired such hatred of a character in me

I actually just finished up the "Millenium(aka The Girl... books)" trilogy about an hour ago. All 3 were great reads. Highly recommended. I read them back-to-back-to-back. I couldn't stop once I started on the first.

Now what to read next....

But I *paid* for it...

Anyway, lesson learned. None of this 'complete the series' business, I'll buy books as I want to read them and not buy ten at once. Times like this I resent that I can't resell an ebook. If someone would pay me the $10, I would happily email them the files and delete my own, but that's not allowed, is it?
I had the same experience with 20 "episodes" of Bowman's "Carthaginian Series" alternate history. And yes, they were cheap, but still - I paid for them.

I don't yet own a portable reader (I may have mentioned that before.) I read on desktop computers, including the ones at work during my lunch break. Between Baen Books Webscriptions and Free Library (and various bundles), and Fictionwise, I have 1200 eBooks on my drive. I do not throw any eBook away, however vile. I would if one contained kiddie porn, but probably not for any other reason. So those 20 Bowman stinkers have subdrectories like "Bowman.Return _to_Athens" and so on, and they are listed in my master index.

I just read and enjoyed the five free episodes of "Denial of Service" by Steve Jordan (no relation, I think) and laughed a lot. They now reside on my directory as "Jordan.Denial_of_Service_Book_1" through Book 5. I can recommend them, but with an R rating. It just made them better.

And indeed, I hadn't read that one. An enjoyable read, even if it's obviously not a whole story, and didn't really advance the major plot lines at all. Considering how long the series has been running, a good book.

Now onto "The Night Bird" by Catharine Asaro. I like her SF, and I hope her fantasy is of the same standard. So far, so good, but I'm only a few 'pages' in. The description at fictionwise seems rather purpler prose than the book itself.

I'm not buying any books at the moment, but I've added the two "Girl..." books available at fictionwise (and currently at 100% micropay rebate) to my wish list. They do sound interesting.

Yes, they do. Too bad the French translation is not available electronically. And the books are always out at my local library
