The pills I got yesterday work, kinda. I'm feeling a lot better little coughing, no prickly nose or irritated eyes. I did wake up coughing after 4 hours of sleep, waiting for the pill to work I managed another couple of hours. So it's better, but not great. Hopefully it'll keep working, but I'm going to call the doctor's office tomorrow. Because I just want to be able to sleep uninterrupted again.

For a cough made worse by that tickle in the throat, very cold water or ice chips can help calm it. Even breathing cold air can help when it happens to me.
The last time I had the upper respiratory cold/sinus issues, I kept ice chips in a polar cup by my bed. It really helps when I get that tickle cough that won't stop. |

Another night of only two hours sleep.
I just called the doctor and the assistant first tried to tell me to get a certain medicine and try that for a couple of days. But I've already been through two boxes of that stuff and it doesn't do much. She said it couldn't be hay fever with the rain we've had yesterday. She didn't know what else I could use to stop the coughing. The basic message I got was that I just should live with it until it magically disappears. Eventually she agreed to have my doctor call me between noon and one pm. She can decide whether she wants to see me or not. I'm now going to make a list of all the things I tried and which didn't work. I thought about it that maybe something sharp is stuck at the back of my throat, that's how it felt during the night. But I don't think that's likely since the irritated area differs, sometime at the top of my throat, sometimes at the bottom, now the itch has moved deeper it feels. I do hope I can find/get something that works. I'm just so incredibly tired. For all I can I get sleeping pills prescribed that knock me out at night. |

It sounds like you've tried all your usual over-the-counter cold and allergy remedies and nothing is working. I hope you can get some help from the doctor's office.

When my husband had a lingering persistent cough last year, turned out he had "walking pneumonia" and 10 days on an antibiotic finally cleared it up.

It was so odd...my husband had a cold, and it just lingered. No fever, just a mild feeling of "icky" and that dry unproductive cough. If his cough had been rattling or loose, he would have gone to the doctor much sooner.

Thank you all. I'll keep an eye on it.
The doctor is convinced that it's just a virus. Either the same one I had in January, or a new one (working in a store this is entirely possible). The biggest problem is "breaking the cycle". Once I start coughing properly it'll take a lot of effort, and time, to stop. During the day I can easily do this. But at night I wake up coughing like crazy, stopping is hard then. I do sleep very light. It's just weird, I can go hours without coughing, and then it suddenly starts up again. If I can prevent it from getting bad it tends to go away quickly. But I can't do that in my sleep. The doctor prescribed sleeping pills, tamazepam, for five nights. Hopefully that'll knock me out enough that it prevents me from even starting to cough. If there is little or no progress by Friday I'll call the doctor's office again and make an appointment. |

I hate to suggest it, but good old fashioned Tylenol #3 (Codeine), or 1/2 of a Vicodin tablet is probably the best way to suppress the cough overnight.

Vicodin is prescription over here too (USA). Tylenol is Paracetemol (sp?) but Tylenol #3 is a prescription strength of it. A doctor could tell you to take XX quantity of pills to get the same effect, but I would wait for a doctor to say it. Especially with sleeping pills too.

Both would be prescription only, I'm sure. Of course, when you've had a knee replacement, you're likely to still have some around from before the replacement. (There are a few advantages to being old, even if they're not quite what you expected.)
The codeine cough syrup should do the trick. Just don't use more than the recommended dose. Especially if you're taking a sleeping pill. (Tylenol #3 is NOT the same as an extra strength of Tylenol/paracetamol. It is a regular strength PLUS a low dose of codeine. Still available here "over the counter", but not on the open shelves.) Hey coworkers. One of you needs to step the heck up and volunteer to come in this weekend. The last 3 times someone's not shown up or been sick on their weekend I've been the one to come in, usually on very short notice. You have 4 days to change your plans, I've made it known I don't want to be the one stuck working again. Someone else's turn.

I slept well. It looks like the sleeping pills work for about six hours for me. I went to bed last night and woke up just before 5am. I did have to cough, but that was due to a dry throat, drinking some ice tea (Arizona green tea with ginseng and honey works best) helped. I did manage to fall asleep again and was woken by the alarm.
I'm feeling a bit floaty right now. Might be because of the deep sleep, might be a side effect of the sleeping pill. I do feel refreshed and since waking up I hardly had to cough. So I'm happy so far. |
