Shel, have you tried lemon juice, honey, ginger (not the one on this thread ) and aspirin in boiling water? Sometimes the old remedies are the best.

we, quite unfortunately, do not have that kind of ginger here. it would have to be the powdered version for cooking or raw

The powdered version (if it's the same one I'm thinking of) is fine. Just a pinch. It'll add a bit of heat to the drink.

Squeeze a couple of lemons, add a good teaspoon or two of honey, two aspirin, a pinch of ginger and top up with boiling water. Tastes good, too.

there are a couple of different types of ginger tea available which could help. I always keep those on hand for icky tummies

If it tastes good it can't be medicine. I use fresh grated ginger for this and add some garlic. Tastes horrible so must be good for me.

Vernor's is quite good, but somehow misses being a true ginger ale. Schweppes (the US version) and Canada Dry are passable, but both too sweet.

so far the best ginger ales I've had in this country are from micro-brewers, and the best by far is by one that puts out a fairly popular rootbeer as well. and the name escapes me at the moment. someone will probably come up with it.... remember, it's a micro-brew. it's not A&W or Barqs. I'm pretty sure it has national availability.... ARGH!
