Do you actually HAVE to wait to get paid before you can buy the reader?

That is: if you didn't get paid for another week, would have problems for a week, if you bought the reader right NOW instead of after you get paid?

In that case, I wouldn't do it. Save up for it for a few months, and you'll probably be much happier about buying it. At least, that is how I've done things most of my life. ("If I would burn €300 right now, would I possibly get into trouble?" If the answer is yes, then don't buy a €300 device....)

Well, as for me, I couldn't save if my life depended on it. So I've always bought all my devices and things whenever I could.

I wanted to buy the Sage, but you practically convinced me that I shouldn't, because the Oasis is superior in all aspects.

Why did you say in the end of your post that you'd still opt for a Kobo?
The software on the Kobo is so much better than the Kindle’s software. On the Kindle I’m always stuck on a font size that’s either too big or too small, and a font weight that’s too thin or too thick. I can’t set my margins as small as I want, or the line spacing. I can’t see how many pages I’m in the book and in the chapter. I can do all of those on a Kobo.

The lighting is now good enough for me to go for the superior software experience rather than the superior hardware experience.

The only advantage of the Kindle software over the Kobo software is speed and global search. Both are important to me and so I'm not getting rid of my Oasis yet.

In all other aspects, the Kobo software is better.

I've just been reading on my 5 year old KA1, after it has been inactive for quite some time. (Reading is just one of my many hobbies, and sometimes one or the other doesn't get a lot of attention for some time.)

It seems the battery dropped 10% in around 50 minutes of reading. (Light is at 15-20%). This means it'll only hold a charge for 500 minutes, which is 8.5 hours. That's not very long... and as far as I know, I can't replace the battery in the KA1. Neither can this be done in any other newer Koob.

I wonder if there are readers that still have replaceable batteries.

for me this sums up the Kindle/Kobo dilemma perfectly

KA1 with larger battery and 8" Carta 1200 screen. That would work.

I doubt I’d risk a sage again tbh. I might risk a Libra 2 when I can get one locally. I have a beautiful Libra H20 and a very nice Forma. I just wanted a kobo with 32GB storage. But maybe I don’t need that after all.

I just wish buying an e-reader wasn’t a screen lottery all the time. The only e-reader I’ve every bought where I kept the first one was my Voyage.
Wait until Argos has the Sage available. Then you can take it right out of the box and make sure the screen is acceptable before leaving the store.

not interested in a squarish e-reader? i can't help but wonder would Kobo have gone down the squarish e-reader road without the Kindle Oasis.

It's possible Kobo may not have gone the Oasis style if not or Amazon. As for what I want, I don't have much choice in the design if I want a new Kobo. But I don't think it would be an issue or I'd get used to it.

I'm still not fully committed in my own mind to buying one, but doing so would not be problem. I only get paid monthly, but October has been a very busy month of work, so getting one would be a treat paid for by the extra work. I looked at my monthly budget, saw that it was feasible. Now I have time for the gadget lust to cool before the money turns up in my account

The real problem is if you leave it with the battery completely drained for any length of time. If you leave it 60% charged and top it up once a month or so even though you're not using it, it should prevent battery degradation. Not many people are willing to go to that hassle, though.

I just picked up a used Aura One this week and was a little worried that it might have a degraded battery, but fortunately it seems to be fine. Dropping about 10% a day, but that's with at least a few hours reading per day. 10% every hour would definitely have annoyed me.

When people say they don't care about battery performance when they get new devices, they almost invariably overlook that it isn't the first year of using the device they need to think about, but the second and third when the battery is only functioning around 50% of it's original capacity.
