I discovered yet another website with free music downloads. The company offering the downloads is eMusic. This company offers one new track per day. The process with this company appears to be a no-strings-attached one--no registration, no logging in, no surrender of personal information, nothing.

I think that I read somewhere that all of the free tracks are MP3's, but I couldn't find that information again when I looked for it again a little while ago.

It's getting close to midnight EDT right now, so I don't know if you'll have an opportunity to download today's (Saturday's) track, but I wanted to give you the information about it so that it might help you get an idea about the quality, as far as the music and performance itself is concerned, of the tracks. Today's track is from artist Public Memory, and the song is Ringleader from the album Wuthering Drum. It's in the Electronic genre, which I don't particularly like, but I actually liked this song.

It appears that there are two ways to learn what each day's download is and to download it. The first one involves going to any one of their webpages--I'll use their homepage as an example. There is a menu at almost the top of the page with "browse" as the first option. If you will do a mouse-over, several options appear, including one labelled "daily download." Click on it. That takes you to a webpage with the daily download and all that you have to do is to click on "download free track" in order to get your download. As you can see, this method is easy peasy. Of course, this method requires you to remember, or set up some kind of third party reminder, to check the offering every day.

I don't know how this would actually work, but the second method involves installing a toolbar. However, it uses an .xpi file, which I understand is meant for the Mozilla Firefox browser. This is the URL for the website that you need to use to install it. I ran into an issue installing it, however, getting the error message "The add-on download from this site could not be installed because it appears to be corrupt." Maybe some good MobileRead soul who is more computer savvy than me (that would basically be anyone else. ha) can help us work through that issue. I think that there are what are called "extensions" that you can install for the Google Chrome browser, at least, which will open .xpi files. I downloaded and installed one of those extensions, spent a few minutes trying to figure out how to make it work, and then quit. I might be able to get it to work eventually, but I doubt that I have the technical knowledge to tell anyone else how I "got there"! This is another place where some kind soul probably could help us get this to work.

My apologies to people on this thread. This is about the Naxos free music offer. I accidentally posted it (yesterday?) on the Media Deals thread, instead of this one. Maybe most of you follow the Audiobooks thread, too, and so saw this; but for those of you who don't/didn't, I'm posting it on the correct thread now.

Here's more info about Naxos that I feel that you all would like to know about. Before giving that information, however, let me complain about something: things are overly complicated and not very straightforward when dealing pre-sale, at least, with Naxos, IMHO. It's downright obnaxos (no, I didn't misspell, that's a pun).

I found out that there are more freebies available from Naxos besides the plum albums that they give away each month. They have a department or subsidiary called Naxos Direct, which offers "weekly free MP3 downloads" of classical music, as well as some trifles and trinkets, if you sign up for their newsletter (more information is here: http://www.naxos.com/aboutus.asp?pag...gital-services).

Really, I should have said "newsletters" in the previous paragraph. Because they offer several, and I don't know which one(s) that you have to get in order to get the MP3 freebies each month. So, I signed up for all of them to cover all of the bases. Here's one way to sign up for them: go to www.naxosdirect.com. Click on the button on the righthand side that says, "join our mailing list." Follow the prompts. I'm assuming that they will let us know, by email each week, when a new MP3 is ready to download.
