That's true. I recently let a 90% coupon expire because I couldn't find a book to purchase.

I recently gifted a 90% coupon because I didn't have a use for it. One good thing about this place, there's always someone who wants a coupon.

I hit my paper TBR reduction target (7) yesterday, and we're not quite half-way through the year. I'm pretty happy with that. All I need to do from now on is break even, although it would be nice to continue making progress.

7 was the size of my smallest stack of unread paper books. There are 8 or 9 stacks, plus others which are still on my bookshelves.

Congrats!

I'm not so far along as you, but this is the one area where I'm making progress even though I'm off my desired pace. I've bought one paper book this year and have eaten into the stacks. I had resolved to buy none at all the first half of the year and while I slipped early, I did pull myself together. I'm going to renew my resolution for the next three months, and then I'll see.

As for the rest of my goals....

Some people are book buying addicts. I used to be until I joined up with Kindle Unlimited, now I have access to more books than I could possibly read in my life time. I am free now to follow one of my other addictions, at the moment that's my Mrs.

I'm well ahead of my reading goal. I am trying to reduce my paper, but there are few used book stores around to take my books and some of those people can be picky. One store only takes paperbacks, and will reject perfectly good books... I don't know it they have a mental inventory of all their books and don't need extras or they only like certain genres or what... another prefers hardcover, but if the book isn't "like new" then they won't take it.

I tend to be pretty gently with my books when I read, but others in the household aren't. If all else fails, then I will drop 'em off at a Goodwill-type donation station. That's where I get a lot of them anyway...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but reducing your TBR pile is all about reading them, not selling or giving them away?

Oh, they're read. And some of them have been read again.

And again.

But paper books--even trade paperbacks--take up space, which is a premium in my tiny house. So I will keep certain valuable or sentimental volumes, and dispose of the rest. Either they are read-once things or I have bought digital copies, which are more easily stored, though not quite so well-displayable (unless I hang a virtual bookshelf of some sort...)

Halfway through the year and I'm not doing well. I was supposed to be playing catch-up in June; instead, I fell further behind. I'm barely at my benchmark rate for total books read and am off the pace for all of my subgoals but one. I won't go into the sorry details.

All I can do is keep trucking; I don't want to give up although the reality is that my goals are becoming increasingly unlikely.

Halfway through the year and 52 books read or heard, which puts me 51 books over my yearly goal of one book.

I've never been able to read 100 books in a year -- I've been logging my yearly books only since about 2010 or so -- but today I am up to 78 books for the year. Not quite there, and I could fall off at any time, but it's looking like I may surpass my previous high book total of 94 from several years ago.

Ummm. You maybe need to review your target setting criteria?

Half way, time for a review.

My goals:
  1. To finish 2016 with my TBR below 700
  2. To read my 75 unread ebooks bought before 1st July 2008
  3. To spend no more than £20 per month on average

TBR as of 30th June 2016 was 758.
Unread books bought before 1st July 2008 was 10
Average monthly spend was £33.69

So I'm doing pretty well, except that I'm buying too many new books.
We shall see how the second half of the year goes.

Oh - and 108 ebooks read or abandoned in the first half of the year.

I'm doing well so far this year. According to Goodreads I'm currently 18 books ahead of schedule. It seems that this year I'm enjoying shorter books than in previous years, but I'm also almost 3000 pages ahead on my 40000 page of my page challenge. I'm currently rereading Stephen King's It, because of the length the number of books I'm ahead will decrease but it's a good read for my page count.

I'm not doing so well with my ever ongoing challenge of keeping my active series to a reasonable number, so I need to work on those.

I'm also doing well on my theme challenge. I've finished seven themes so far, one more than planned and in July I plan to tackle two more. Maybe I'll give myself a month off in August.

My TBR is down by 12, and my paper TBR is down by 7, so I'm doing well on my main targets.

My only sub-challenge which is behind schedule is the BSFA winners, where I've only read 2 of my target 6. Which is the same number I'd read at the end of the first quarter, I seem to remember. I'm probably going to start one today, though, so I won't be too far behind.
