Note-taking

Hi,

I am new to this site. I am seriously considering buying M96 but I hesitate due to all the reported bugs. I would like to use the device also as a note taking tool.

What is your experience on this after all the firmware updates?
Can it be comfortably used for taking notes at seminars, conferences etc?
Is there a video showing the responsiveness of the device (the speed of theappearance of notes) while writing in some note-taking app?

Thank you in advance for any comments.

I have tried many note taking apps from google store and they all have some latency (delay). It is like the "pen's ink" is trailing the tip of stylus some pixels behind. Can be kind of annoying.

However with the OnyxScribble app that comes installed with Booxtor's firmware it is perfect, no delay, no latency. It is like writing in paper. The app is poor in features though. Has only the basics. I'd rather use "MyScript Notes Mobile", "LectureNotes" or "Write (from Stylus Labs)".

I have big expectations that OnyxScribble gets better with time, like having page ruling etc

Hi mmmrqs, thanks for the tips. However, I wouldn't hold my breath for Onyx to fix the scribble app. They put a similarly worthless piece of junk on the M92 and refused to touch it afterwards, despite my repeated pleas to do so (I even sent them a list of functions that would be required). Now that you can install third party apps, they have even less incentive to improve the built-in app.
Lag? I don't think Onyx engineers even get as far as to try any third-party apps, especiallly for scribbling.
This is the reason I will not buy the M96 until I am absolutely sure that it is suitable for my purposes. I hope that day will come at some point, but frankly, I am sceptical.

O.k, I need to correct myself. I just checked the Wishlist on the M92 wiki, and was pleasantly surprised that several issues had been resolved, including some of mine. (It's still not really usable, mind you, but it's almost there.)
I therefore take back my bitter words and hereby declare that there is hope for the scribble function of the M96 after all!

You can open a PDF of lined/graph/music paper in the Onyx Neo Reader and scribble away.

Jmirko, how well did the M92 export?

I don't want to go off topic in a M96 thread, please see my M92 scribble export experience here (posts 120 and 121):

Smile Bugs with M96 Software...

Hi everybody,

I am new on this forum. I just bought a M96 (Booxtor edition). I must say, finally I find a device very close to my requirements. Pdf reading, taking notes, surfing in web for new papers etc.
Good job Onyx and also Booxtor!.. Thank you!..

The only problem is the bugs with the apps, which can be sometimes very disturbing.
I am sure Booxtor is on the way to improve the software.

So, I just want to mention some of the most disturbing ones. May be I would have some contribution for the next versions.

- On landscape mode, scribble does not work properly. If I underline a sentence, the line appears on the screen as it were on portrait mode. It corrects itself only after choosing another action (e.g. tipping erease button).

- On some pdf's, scribble does not appear. If I tip on "Notes", I see only 3 options (TOC, Annotate, Bookmark), scribble icone does not appear.

- If I choose zoom option "page width", I have to sweep the page with stylus towards the bottom of the page (which works very good). But afterwards if I proceed to the next page, I see the bottom of it, not the top.

- I could not use the dictionary. If I tipped the word, a window appears, with options: highlight, dictionary etc. But if I tip dictionary, a search line appears with the selected word. That's all. Tipping the search icone, does not help.

May be these are not bugs and I am not using the software properly.

I appreciate your comments!..

I just got my M96 and frankly I am disappointed. I was under the impression that a Pearl White screen would be white. This thing is pretty much green, not much whiter than my old PocketBook Pro 902.

It is about the same screen contrast as my 5 year old Pocket Book Pro 902. Really disappointed....I am returning it and hoping the PB Ink Pad will be better.

I find that the M96 is almost identical in color and darkness to my Kobo Aura HD, but, of course, the Kobo has a nice white even frontlight.
IMHO, the additional size vs. the Kobo 7" display is well worth it.

Hi Everyone,

Thought I would ask if anyone on here had any solutions for some of the bugs I listed earlier on in this thread.

Specifically, has anyone found some kind of app or other way (an update?) which would ensure that the scribbles I make in Onyx Neo reader will stay on the pdfs after I turn off my M96?

I'm really going to need to use this feature more and more, and soon, and it would save me much time and hassle if I could get those scribbles to stay. * The current best method I have is to leave my M96 on ALL the time....although not sure if this is doing something bad to the battery (although, as it is e-ink, I'm not sure it should be discharging at all when just displaying a static screen).* I recharge it from time to time, but after a while, there are some detectable errors and lag , and I think it just needs to be powered off every once in a while....but then I'm back at square one regarding being able to keep my scribbles.

Does anyone have any advice on how to make those scribbles stay put on PDF documents?

Thanks in advance!
