I think this is from Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household. And since apparently orlok is down for the count for a bit, I'll take it from here.

"I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills. The Equator runs across these highlands, a hundred miles to the north, and the farm lay at an altitude of over six thousand feet. In the day-time you felt that you had got high up; near to the sun, but the early mornings and evenings were limpid and restful, and the nights were cold."

One of the few books where the film was better than the book. Not that I'm saying the book was bad, but it wasn't a patch on the film. I still cry every time Meryl's voice breaks in her eulogy, and I'm a man. Mind you, of course, the film was taken from several books, not just 'Out of Africa'. Come to think of it, was the book actually called 'Out of Africa'? I must go downstairs and look.

Yes it was, by Isak Dinesen. And among other sources of the film, I like both the Judith Thurmann biography of Karen Blixen and Silence Will Speak, the bio of Denys Finch-Hatton.

The first quote made me think Pratchett. The second quote is sounding a bit like Vonnegut, but that doesn't seem right to me.
