I'd never heard of that TV series before, but I Googled it and it looked interesting. Amazon has only one book of the Lovejoy series available for Kindle, Faces in the Pool by Jonathn Gash (penname of John Grant), so I downloaded a sample.

The comet doesn't look like a bright star. It started out appearing as a very bright spotlight directed straight up in the sky. It has dimmed considerably and now looks like a long brighter smudge in the Milkyway.

A very sad, but true fact. I read somewhere that people living in cities can only see around 72 of the brightest stars, compared to the 7000+ naked eye stars visible from a dark rural location.

I remember being on our backs in the grass, when we were kids, to watch the night time stars. It was beautiful and so sparkly. Now, even on a moonless night, it just isn't the same with so much of the city lights on.

I also remember traveling to a friends house in the mountains and we stopped the car to get out and watch meteors cross the sky. I was a moonless night and we had moved a bit away from the car without thinking, just to get a better look away from the trees. When we decided to continue on our way, we realized we couldn't see the car! It was pitch black and we had to put our hands out and only one person move at a time so we wouldn't get to far off and get even more distance from the car. I had forgot how dark it could be away from any light at all.

Right now, deciding whether to make another cup of coffee or just get going on my errands.

A few years ago, while looking upwards in Osaka, I thought I saw a planet in the sky. Getting closer I discovered it was a street light and a lot of light pollution...

One of the perks of scuba diving in remote locations is that we get to see the stars again. There is a very small island (200m diameter) called Sangalaki that we enjoy visiting about 50 miles off the east coast of Borneo, itself not really much of a light polluter, that presents night skies that are almost white with stars.

It was really weird moving to the city from my mum's house - I'm so used to being able to see loads of stars and you can't really see any in Glasgow.

Just watched about six episodes of The Muppet Show in a row. Slight overdose!

Sitting watching TV on New Year's Eve - but it's too hot do do much and we are expecting 41 degC tomorrow. I think I'll just sleep through until the weather cools down.
