Although the physicial memory might not actually be the limit it is hitting, but rather an internal limit set in the software.

In any case, there is always Browse Folders, which is great for handling huge numbers of files. So you might want to consider using that, instead of the inefficient Sony cache system.

PS: I did a quick test with making a PRS+ command that marks ALL books as read or unread, and it had no problem with 4300+ files. So I'll add that once I've decided what the best implementation is (it should offer a choice between IM/SD/MS, for instance).
Interesting but even with that memory it should be ok, it seems so that it is mostly a optimization problem.

I am aware of Browse folder but it doesn't what I want, ie collection, thumbnails, sorting, search and so on as far as I know.
I am wondering if it would be possible to recode the original sony cache handling or if as you said it would be possible to modify memory handling, but the problem here apart from the ton of work it would probably be is that you may have to modify the core MontaVista operating system.

EDIT: Concerning the read unread/problem, I am a little surprised because if you are able to this it means that you are able to load the 4300+ cache or is there something I don't understand?

Sorry, turns out I was drawing conclusions too soon. Changing read/unread through PRS+ for all 4300+ books worked fine, and the result was immediately clear in the book list. However, if I then shut down and start the reader again, it crashes on loading. So it's a no-go after all.

Rewriting the Sony's caching system is not feasible imho, but freeing up more mem should be. Or rather, it feels like a possibility, since I have no idea how to actually do it

I am wondering about the cache because I don't exactly what can be done with the kinoma software, and how the cache function is working.
I have seen that 7z has been added which means some possible addition of compiled files/library so if there is way to compile something which is returning the same thinks as the kinoma software...
As it is possible to manage cache loading, for me it means that PRS+ can call some library doing the work. After this I don't know if it is possible to recreate a xml parser which would be leaner with the same output.

Freeing memory may be a problem but i think the first think to know would be how the memory is used by the reader and for example how much memory do you need to store your cache because I find it hard to believe that you can't run all this with 128Mo. I remember when my laptop was running a suse with e17 without major problem with this amount of memory (I agree it is not the same situation but still...).

I think that it's complicated to rewrite the cache handler for Sony software. I think the problem is the memory use, yes, but finding how to do it and correcting the leak (because it's a leak)... I think it's a very hard task, mainly because we're not talking about correcting a software we have the source code, that it's already complicated, but "extract the source code", modify it and replace it... I think that it's a feature I'll opt out, too much risky.

I upgraded my prs 650 to PRS+ 2.1.xx. Does anyone notice that the page turn is noticeably slower than usual? It is on my reader. How can I uninstall PRS+ 2.1.xxx and revert back to 2.0.17rc3 without reformatting my reader?

Thanks

There's an uninstaller on the prs plus website under downloads. Probably try that and then reinstall 2.0.17

There is no need for the uninstaller,
just copy the PRSPInstaller folder of an older release into IM, shutdown, restart and you are done.
By editing installer.sh in this folder, (it's placing a "#" remark in front of a line, and it is commented clearly in the script) you can remove PRS+.
But note that with this method some changes to the root-file-system like the modified system-fonts will be retained.

Try to shutdown and restart the reader once again. Sometimes after putting new version, some internal processes are triggerd, just give it some minutes. Should revert to normal then.

Thank you for the quick response. After shutting down & restarting the reader 3 times, the page turn speed seems to go back to normal.

Thanks again

Is there any way to set the page-turn so it starts from the top each time? (While in zoom-lock, I mean.)

v2.0 final will be released first, and after that it will probably be some time before the first public beta of v2.1 is released. Custom builds allow you to be up to date with the repository code, but I wouldn't recommend them for normal use. That is, unless you don't mind running into unknown bugs (with unknown consequences).

I think you are a little bit harsh, custom build are running smoothly most of the time with a very occasional blocking bug.
