It's been a mixed month for me. I'm actually ahead on the TBR - which is almost unheard-of, and which I'd love to be able to maintain all year - but my purchases have been more expensive than my reads. January is a little bit of a special case, though, since I've been signing up for/creating challenges, which occasionally need acquisitions. Two of the purchases, including the most expensive, a new* paperback at full price, were for a 50s SF challenge.

There are also a few new releases coming up that I'm interested in, but I think I'll do better in February.

*Actually published in 2011, and quite difficult to find now. More expensive on amazon, so I was quite lucky to find it at cover price.

Three weeks into the year, I haven't bought anything and my TBR is down by four. A new Kobo contest has started, but I'm three books in hand on my book-a-week resolution. I have identified only two books I'd buy and one of them will require at least a 65% off coupon, so it may not happen. There's always next month, eh? And I've noticed that wants postponed usually become less pressing and if they don't, perhaps they're a true want.

I've passed up several somewhat interesting books for a couple of bucks apiece, so all in all, I'm pleased but not complacent.

My real inner battle right now is the deal for the Aubrey/Maturin audiobooks at Downpour. Fortunately or unfortunately, I've made no resolutions regarding audiobooks!

Not an issue unless you buy audiobooks that you never get to. I have over 500 audiobooks, with over 300 unlistened. Now, part of that is simply that they had a lot of whispersync deals in 2013 & 2014, and as I suspected, they wouldn't last. Many of the $1.99 deals are now $12-14 as contracts expired. Although my public library is great, they have very little regards audiobook in scifi or fantasy (other than paranormal romance).

Ah. It's a good job I haven't spent my budget this month, because I'm going to need it next month.

LightSpeed Magazine has another Kickstarter. I can extend my Lightspeed magazine subscription by a year AND get all the back issues of their Fantasy magazine for just $36, about £24. I can't buy it this month, but the kickstarter has 24 days to go, and I can buy on 1st February. I guess the Baen books I wanted will just have to wait a bit longer, unless I get a 75% code in the current competition.

Goodness. And I thought I was going to walk it this year!

My New Years resolution both this and last year was to purchase no more (hardcover) Cookbooks. I failed last year and it is something I constantly have to monitor myself on. What I did to keep myself from failing this month is to go to Amazon Kindle store, pull up cookbooks and sort cheapest first. I then went over the free ebooks and ended up with 15 with many of them very short works of under 100 pages. I figure this will hold me over for the 1st quarter of the year. As far as paid ebooks this month, I spent about $10 this month.

That is really tough, so I sympathize, but there is hope. I bought NO paper cookbooks last year, but did buy 7 ecookbooks, 1 for my sister and 2 ecopies of paperbooks I already have. All were under $2 due to special offers. I did slake my need by getting free cookbooks, but they do clutter up after awhile. I have started eliminating some of those freebees just like I am eliminating some of my paperbook cookbooks.

Hmm.. checking, I find that's £7.50 out of £21 in promotional credits since 29th November, 2014.

I'll be using up my promotional credit at some point and I'm not going to count it against myself if I have to go over a bit. But I'm still clean on the year when it comes to the written word.

I'm belaboring the obvious, but now I realize how much of my buying was just a bad habit, of the see-want-buy variety. I'm shrugging my shoulders at a lot of buys lately and I can't even get exercised about the latest Kobo contest. I'm hoping I can hold the thought; I do know backsliding is very easy.

Mea culpa. But really, you'll have hours and hours and hours of enjoyment out of them, and at a price you're not likely to beat. And unlike all too many 'impulse" purchases I think we've all made, you already know you'll enjoy those recordings.

But no back-sliding now. You can do it.
