I'm trying my sample of "green oolong first grade" and it's delicious. It has all of the flavors that I associate with different unroasted oolongs all in one. Importantly, though, there aren't really any "new" flavors that I don't recognize, so when I'm tasting cheaper teas I think I can have a pretty good idea of what's missing or out of balance.

Coke Zero, as usual. (Old-style coke zero. The new stuff didn't seem very different in a free sample, but I haven't done a proper comparison yet.)

The first time I had a green oolong, I thought there might be something wrong with it. It didn't taste like what I thought of as "tea". If I had to pick only one style of tea forevermore, though, that would be it.

Right now I'm trying my sample of Yunnan black. It's incredibly bold and malty with medium astringency like a rich English breakfast, but with almost no bitterness. It took me by surprise and I wasn't sure I liked it at first, but it's already growing on me.

Ah, Yunnan black. I keep trying to like it, but it's just too malty for me.

Today, after being reduced to "Cranberry Juice" for the last couple of days, it's a pleasure to get back to my faux San Pellegrino.

I have never had a tea referred to as green oolong but I have noticed that there are some Oolongs that are closer to a green tea in color and taste then others. I suspect that the processing differs a bit and that the region the tea is from plays a role.

Everyone except Ten Ren seems to call them "jade" oolongs. The jade/green oolongs are less oxidized and roasted than the darker oolongs.

Today I'm trying some Wissotzky English Breakfast from a box of short-dated K-Cups that I scored at the dollar store. It's pretty good and on par with decent grocery store tea like Twinings, but it has a strange herbal aftertaste that I assume comes from the safflower listed in the ingredients.
